The work involves visiting homes and businesses to locate and record meter readings, which are given to the PCU Office Manager to prepare utility bills. Work is performed under the general supervision and direction of the PCU Water & Sewer Superintendent. - Responsible for performing customer service duties in the field reading water meters, placing door hangers to inform customers of service changes/usage, identify water meter equipment problems, perform minor water meter maintenance, and recording usage and turning off and restoring service as directed.
- Reads and re-reads, when necessary, residential, and commercial water meters throughout the County and records consumption in hand-held computer.
- Locates meters, removes meter covers as necessary and accurately records readings.
- Turns water service off and on as assigned.
- Observes condition of meters, leaks, unsafe conditions, or unauthorized use of water immediately to Superintendent.
- Sets meters and performs minor maintenance and repairs.
- Provides courteous and efficient service to customers and provides information concerning.
- District's regulations governing service when necessary.
- Operates a motor vehicle in connection with assigned duties.
- Subject to On-Call rotation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education & Experience Knowledge of customer service principles and practices; safe work practices and principles and safe driving practices; and general operational characteristics of water meters. Skill in learning to read all styles of water meters; preparing simple records; reading and interpreting street maps. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with other employees and the public; effectively resolve customer disputes; explain District service regulations and requirements to the public; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; and work independently in the absence of supervision. High school diploma or GED and combination of education and experience equivalent to two years of day-to-day interaction with other employees or the public to provide requested services with accurate attention to detail and adherence to procedures or standards. Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.This position is a safety sensitive position and subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with the Pender County Personnel Policy and Risk Policy.
