Position Type: Middle School Teacher Pool (2024-2025 SY)/Middle School Teacher 2024-2025Date Posted: 1/26/2024Location: Middle Schools (Either Campus)(High-Needs School)Date Available: 08/2024Middle School Special Education Teacher FLSA Status: Exempt Days of Work: 190 GENERAL SUMMARY Under general supervision, creates a classroom environment that is positive, safe and student-centered. Assists special needs students in learning subject matter and/or skills that will advance their achievement. Assist with writing the individualized learning plan for each student. Works with each student effectively to meet his/her goals. Works with parents effectively and with care. Uses a variety of assessments to evaluate student learning, to shape instruction and provide meaningful learning experiences. Reports to the school Principal. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned.)
  • Cooperates in developing a program of continuous progress consistent with District goals and objectives to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of pupils.
  • Teaches each student according to the IEP and /or the 504 plan written for the individual student.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in District policies students' needs and interests and updates that pertain to Special Services.
  • Establishes clear and appropriate objectives for all classroom activities and communicates these objectives to students and parents.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting each student's specific goals.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of each student on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Analyzes the progress of individual students on a regular basis and seeks appropriate assistance as needed.
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Reinforces all knowledge and skills taught by speech therapists and physical therapists.
  • Assists with physical health programs, including exercising, stretching and walking for physical therapy; adjusts special equipment / adaptive equipment for student use as needed; monitors and inspects students' prostheses, casts, braces, etc., for proper functioning.
  • Works with individual students to help them adjust behaviorally and academically into partially or fully mainstream classroom and social situations.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraprofessional/s and/or volunteers. Provides adequate plans for substitute teachers.
  • Seeks the cooperation and assistance of parents through oral or written communication and/or home visits and conferences.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for educational related purposes when required or requested to do so.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by State and federal law, District policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students and to properly care for all property, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.
  • Is punctual and responsible in performing all duties and activities as assigned.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life, conduct and behavior in a fair and just manner.
  • Provides for his/her own professional growth through an on-going program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning,
  • Participates in school or District staff development programs as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
  • Attends staff meetings, serves on staff committees as requested, and accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular or other activities as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
  • Recognizes and follows the appropriate procedures in the chain of command as designated by board policies and/or administrative procedures.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education and Experience: South Carolina Teacher's Certificate in Special Education. A degree in the area of major study. Master's Degree, preferred. Must be able to effectively teach and communicate with students, staff and parents. Must demonstrate a passion for teaching and learning. Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation. Knowledge: Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school District which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge in the methods for developing lesson plans, instructional materials, and classroom activities. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Knowledge of proper maintenance of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling student academic and behavioral problems. Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for classroom instructional activities. Thorough knowledge of Special Education Law and the Districts Special Services Program. Skills/Effort: Ability to provide instruction to special needs students through explanation, demonstration and/or supervised practice. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in classroom and other settings. Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities. Ability to prepare individual learning plans, individual accommodation plans, lesson plans, assessments and instructional materials for classroom activities. Ability to identify student behavioral and/or academic problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action to parents. Ability to communicate effectively with students, their parents, District staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job. Working Conditions: Conducts duties in a classroom environment with some exposure to environmental conditions. Requires ability to perform duties that require constant attention to working with students. Physical demands are restricted to classroom work requiring the lifting/moving of items weighing up to 10 pounds. Occasional local travel is required; overnight travel may occasionally be required. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment. Travel Requirements: Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
