Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under general supervision of Midwifery Services and direction of the OB/GYN Division, with some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, provides antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, neonatal, inter-conceptional and gynecological care, in accordance with written midwifery protocols which have been approved by the institution's Medical Board.

There are two (2) assignment levels to differentiate ascending order of assignment scope with corresponding pay levels. However, all personnel in this title perform related work.

Examples of Typical Tasks:

Assignment Level A

In addition to the major duties of the Midwife, utilizes a thorough knowledge of midwifery care to perform the following:

  • Initiates and participates in the education of other health team members, students and community groups.
  • Initiates and participates in studies and research related to health care, midwifery and allied fields, as appropriate within the guidelines of the programs.
  • Interprets and recommends revisions in policies affecting midwifery services and participates in program evaluations.
  • Assignment Level B

    In addition to the major duties of the Midwife, utilizes a substantial knowledge of midwifery care to perform the following:

  • Serves as a resource to facilitate staff development of less experienced midwives and professional staff responsible for the delivery of patient care.
  • Assists in the supervision and administration of midwifery functions and activities.
  • Assists with the supervision and teaching of students of midwifery and other health disciplines.
  • Provides clinical and didactic instructions to students and may conduct lectures or seminars as part of the educational curriculum.
  • Evaluates students' performance and provides oral and written reports/guidance for improvement.
  • Provides input to facility or Department of OB/GYN for development of midwifery education curriculum.
  • PURPOSE OF POSITION:

  • Plans and provides health care for women and newborn infants
  • Establishes a complete database concerning the patient through history taking, physical and appropriate laboratory data
  • Assesses the status of the patient, develops and implements a plan of care with the patient during the prenatal, intrapartal, postpartal, neonatal and inter-conceptional/gynecological periods
  • Provides guidance and education for patients and families concerning health maintenance, admission and discharge, and labor management (including physical and emotional support)
  • Manages Labor, including delivery of the newborn, utilizes medication and performs procedures
  • Provides immediate and follow-up care of newborn infant, including an ongoing assessment and follow-up with the postpartum family
  • Seeks medical consultation for patients with deviations and documentation in the medical record
  • Performs ongoing review of care including, evaluation and documentation in the medical record
  • Provides contraceptive guidance and evaluation and treatment for minor gynecological conditions
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Licensure as a Midwife by the New York State Department of Education.

    Department Preferences

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensure as a Midwife by the New York State Department of Education; and,
  • Two years of clinical experience in midwifery practice.
  • YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 3+
