About this position:
The overall function of this position is to operate the Lowboy trailer to transport heavy loads and large equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in District 61/Unit 720 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Highway Foreman 2. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Class A, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required upon appointment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in mobile equipment operations.
NOTE:
May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license or commercial driver's license.
Function of Work:
To operate heavy mobile equipment to accomplish transportation, maintenance, or construction tasks.
Level of Work:
Advanced.
Supervision Received:
General from a Foreman, or other higher level maintenance supervisory or administrative personnel.
Supervision Exercised:
Functional over lower graded equipment operations or laboring personnel, as needed.
Location of Work:
Levee Districts; Ports; Terminal Districts; Department of Wildlife and Fisheries; Department of Natural Resources; Office of Forestry; Department of Health and Human Resources; or other agencies throughout the state requiring the regular operation of very heavy mobile equipment.
Job Distinctions:
Differs from Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator 1 by the requirement for operation of large mobile cranes, draglines, pile drivers, or locomotives as the primary, regular and recurring function of the job.
Differs from Foreman and other supervisory jobs by the requirement that actual operation of heavy equipment, rather than full-time supervision, constitutes the major function of the job.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
55% Incumbent operates a lowboy truck and trailer with a hauling capacity of 100,000 lbs. or greater for transporting heavy loads and equipment primarily for the purposes of road and bridge construction, maintenance and inspection.
15% Operates tandem dump trucks, excavators, front end loaders, backhoes, bucket trucks, winch trucks, man lifts with up to 135 ft. of boom, skid steer loaders, concrete breakers, forklifts, and other heavy equipment used in routine maintenance functions as needed.
10% Repair or replace culverts, repair guardrail, cut trees, and perform various other maintenance activities. Operates small tools and equipment in order to complete these repairs.
5% Performs preventative maintenance and cleans assigned equipment to minimize downtime, ensure reasonable service life, and provide for safe operation.
5% Handles mobilization of signs and traffic control devices in accordance with Department standards. Flags traffic through work areas as needed. Performs any other task involving daily operations as deemed necessary by immediate supervisor.
5% In the absence of a Foreman, supervises a crew while performing daily activities.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
