Job Summary:We are seeking a detail-oriented and compassionate Phlebotomist to join our team. The Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection and preparation of blood and other specimens, ensuring that patient samples are obtained with minimal discomfort and in a timely, accurate manner. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of venipuncture and specimen handling protocols, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to providing the highest quality care to patients.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform blood draws and other specimen collections (e.g., urine, fecal) in a safe and efficient manner, ensuring minimal discomfort to patients.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and store specimens in accordance with established procedures, ensuring integrity and proper handling.
- Properly explain the venipuncture process or other collection methods to patients in a clear, calm, and courteous manner.
- Demonstrate expertise in using both straight and butterfly needles for blood draws.
- Review and fully understand physician orders for specimen collection and testing.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring accuracy before processing.
- Accurately package and label specimens for transport, ensuring proper temperature and storage conditions.
- Ensure specimens are stored according to required temperature and protocol, following guidelines to maintain sample integrity during transport.
- Adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations and compliance requirements at all times.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain cleanliness and safety in the workplace.
- Attend annual departmental training sessions to stay current on best practices and regulations.
- Respond to telephone inquiries, provide laboratory results as needed, and assist with patient information updates.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the department.
Required Qualifications:- Phlebotomy certification (if required by the state or facility).
- Proven experience in blood draws and specimen preparation, with a thorough understanding of venipuncture techniques.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory protocols, including specimen handling, labeling, and storage.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients to explain procedures in a compassionate manner.
- Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations and standards for bloodborne pathogens and safety protocols.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience with laboratory specimen handling including centrifugation, splitting, and freezing.
- Previous experience working in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting.
- Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Working Environment:- The role will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as per established safety protocols.
- The Phlebotomist will need to maintain a clean and sterile work environment.
- Exposure to potentially infectious materials and hazardous waste, requiring adherence to strict safety standards.
