The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Motor Equipment Operator III to perform a variety of labor and maintenance tasks on the City dredge, piping and related equipment which involves lifting and moving heavy dredge equipment. This position is eligible for a $4,000* hiring bonus. Duties Include:
- Individual will perform a variety of labor and maintenance tasks on the City dredge, piping and related equipment which involves lifting and moving heavy dredge equipment
- Safely operate the dredging vessel (Rudee II) while excavating material at Rudee Inlet
- Utilize computer programs onboard the dredge to effectively maximize production
- Maintain awareness of watercrafts using the channel while conducting the operation
- Ensure oiler performs regular checks and documents findings accordingly
- Ensure all precautions are taken to avoid accidents and incidents
- Ensure all occupants have their PPE on while performing their duties on the dredge and floating support equipment
- Monitor sea state and weather conditions for changes that may affect the safe operation
- Safely operate the skiff (small boat) while connecting pipe-lines to the dredge
- Safely operate the tender (tugboat) while towing the dredge and support equipment
- Safely operate backhoe, bulldozer, forklift, and excavator in support of the operation
- Oil and maintain dredge machinery and mechanical parts
- Synchronize motors, change filters, and operate bilge pump
- Assists in the cleaning of debris and other line blockage problems
- Safely operate the tender and support equipment needed to perform other associated tasks during maintenance and repair of navigational aids
- Paint and clean dredge machinery
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less
- Follow instructions precisely and work diligently to achieve the objective
- Communicate respectfully with citizens, coworkers, and managers
- Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs
Must possess a valid Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Driver's License - Class B (CDL). Please note: This position is ALPHA I and is required to work during all inclement weather (e.g., snow, flooding & hurricanes, etc.).
CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
- $1000 with first paycheck
- $1000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with meets expectation performance rating)
- $2000 at conclusion of probationary period (with meets expectation performance rating)
Non probationary employees with a Class A or Class B commercial driver's license will be eligible for a $4,000 stipend (paid over 26 pay periods).
