OverviewThis is an exciting opportunity to work for the Department of Motor Vehicles in Bennington. The Motor Vehicle Examiner is responsible for the administration of various examinations for motor vehicle and operator's licenses, issuance of various licenses and permits, including the Commercial Driver's License. Duties involve conducting a variety of examinations, including road tests, to determine applicant driving capability. This position is also responsible for assisting with registrations, renewals, and general customer service. Applicants will have the right to withdraw their applications before finger-printing and/or a background investigation is conducted.Environmental FactorsDuties are performed mostly outside in the field and some in an office setting. Incumbents must be able to work quickly and accurately under pressure before the public eye. Due to significant public contact, exposure to contagious illnesses is a daily risk. The incumbent will be working in all weather conditions (rain, wintery slippery roads etc.). Incumbents must be able to multi-task and remain on task to complete their daily schedule. Considerable human relations skills are required to deal with confused, frustrated, nervous, upset, or hostile applicants. Incumbents may be required to take over the operation of a motor vehicle in the interest of personal and public safety. Riding in various vehicles in which the incumbent has little control of the operator of the vehicle and/or environmental conditions of the vehicle or roadway. The incumbent must be able to travel to other offices with minimal notice to assist when staffing shortages occur and various scheduled hours. Private means of transportation may be required. Some overtime work may be required. Incumbents must be able to carry heavy objects of up to 50 pounds. A uniform- must be worn during work hours.Minimum QualificationsFour (4) or more years of work experience that includes public contact functions.Preferred QualificationsOne (1) or more year of college coursework.Special RequirementsA current, valid driver's license is required.An applicant's vision must be correctable to 20/40 (Snellen Test) in both eyes, with normal color perception and field of vision.A valid Commercial driver's license with all endorsements is required within one (1) year of employment.Total CompensationAs a State employee you are offered a great career opportunity, but it's more than a paycheck.
