Summary This position will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator within the VA Orlando Healthcare System Environmental Management Service and all outlying clinics. The Motor Vehicle Operator drives a variety of motor vehicles, including cars, 12-passenger vans, wheelchair vans, wheelchair bus, and other vehicles as assigned. This position requires the following:
  • Current/valid state-issued Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

  • Drives extralong and high 36-passenger bus, 15-passenger van patient transport vehicles, typically weighing anywhere from 12,000 to 21,500 pounds
  • Transports patients to and from the facilities to designated stops through inter-city traffic and on a busy interstate highway, up to 200 miles per day
  • Drive sedans, carryalls, cargo vans, and trucks up to 26,500-pound curb weight
  • Operates gasoline, diesel, and electric powered vehicles up to 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicular Weight Rating, some of which are equipped with airbrakes
  • Transports patients
  • Safely loads, secures, and unloads passengers along with any needed durable medical equipment
  • Prepares trip tickets, maintenance service records and reports of accidents, as necessary
  • Performs proper maintenance on vehicles , such as checking tire pressure, monitoring fluid levels, and washing vehicles
  • Carries out duties in a safe, proficient, and expeditious manner, adhering to schedules, selecting safest and most direct route, obeying all traffic laws, and safety regulations/procedures
  • Transports cargo, ensuring all items are inspected as to physical condition, quantity, and status
  • Obtains requires signatures for deliveries and/or pickups

Qualifications Physical Effort: Will be required to help patients in and out of motor vehicles, wheelchair vans, busses, etc. Will exert heavy physical work, i.e., bending, lifting, turning, or moving arms, feet, legs, operates hand and foot controls, changes tires, makes emergency repairs on vehicles, can lift 50 pounds or more, especially patients, materials, supplies, and equipment. Sitting and driving a car, van, or truck for long periods of time, up to and including eight-hours, or long distances is also required. Working Conditions: Will be required to work outside in all weather conditions. Will be required to lift items more than 50 pounds. Will drive vehicles at legal speeds, through major city congestion, through heavy traffic over complicated roads and interchange systems, and other road conditions. Will work with contaminated materials, i.e., medical waste and supplies. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element.
