Within this complex, the National Postal Museum (NPM) is dedicated to the preservation, study, and presentation of postal history and philately. The NPM uses exhibits, public programs, and research to make this rich history available to scholars, philatelists, collectors, and visitors from around the world.The Museum Specialist is responsible for a wide variety of collections care and management initiatives and reports to the Collections Manager.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESCollections Care and Management
- The incumbent performs collections management work, including technical and routine duties in connection with the care and management of the museum's collection. This includes work associated with object documentation, handling, storage, packing, and shipping, as well as security of the collection, and the installation and de-installation of permanent and temporary exhibitions.
- Performs independent and complex collections management assignments such as preparing objects for storage, leading collections moves, storage planning, and storage rearrangement.
- Marks objects with accession numbers, surveys collections, writes condition reports, catalogs collection objects, and enters data into museum database, The Museum System (TMS).
- Digitizes collections objects using scanning and/or photography software and equipment or supervises contractors and interns in the process.
- Acts as one of the Collections Emergency Point of Contacts (CE POCs) for the unit Collections Emergency Management Program (CEMP).
- Monitors environmental conditions in collections storage and exhibition galleries.
- Ensures that routine gallery inspections are conducted and completes damage and condition reports for objects on display when required.Exhibition & Loan Support
- Provides collections management support for exhibitions and loans.
- Works with Conservator to coordinate the proper conservation and preservation of the collections as assigned.General
- Acts as a Purchase Card holder for department, monitoring and purchasing supplies and tracking expenditures throughout the fiscal year.Performs other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of exhibit de-installation and installation practices, gained through experience.
- Knowledge of object conservation and preservation techniques and practices, gained through experience.
- Knowledge to create exhibit mounts, shipping containers, and holders for objects being couriered to other locations, gained through experience.
- Knowledge of storage management practices for museum collections, gained through experience.
- Ability to organize and report on the condition of museum collection objects, gained through experience.
- Knowledge of photographic and scanning practices to complete the digitization of collection objects, gained through experience or on-the-job training.
- Knowledge to monitor environmental conditions and pest control needs in collection storage and exhibit galleries, gained through experience or on-the-job training.
- Knowledge of exhibit loan procedures, gained through experience.
