Job DescriptionDescription: The Juilliard School's Preparatory Division seeks applicants for the position of Music Advancement Program (MAP) Wind Ensemble Conductor. Responsibilities include conducting weekly rehearsals of the MAP Wind Ensemble; preparing for and leading students in concerts and other performance activities; providing guidance to MAP Fellows (Juilliard college students) who offer support in ensembles; and building community amongst MAP students. In collaboration with MAP's Artistic and Music Directors, the MAP Wind Ensemble Conductor will develop season programming that aligns with the artistic goals of the program. Annual Compensation is $8,000-10,000. Working at Juilliard: The Juilliard School Preparatory Division's faculty serve as teachers, role models, and mentors, guiding students as they develop technical proficiency while fostering creativity and intellectual curiosity. Recognizing the importance of early development and discipline in the music field, the school offers an atmosphere where artistic gifts and technical skills can flourish. This part-time position involves leading a one-hour weekly rehearsal in person on Saturday afternoons during the academic year (September-May). MAP is a tuition-free, Saturday program that exists to cultivate a diverse generation of classical musicians to realize their greatest potential. Serving intermediate and advanced music students from New York City's five boroughs and the tristate area who demonstrate a commitment to artistic excellence, our mission is to enrich the lives of young people by creating pathways and increasing access to classical music education; prioritizing artistry, mindfulness, and musical excellence; and building an ecosystem of students, families, and educators where music is the heartbeat of a thriving community and its people. MAP is led by Artistic Director Anthony McGill and is generously supported through an endowed gift in memory of Carl K. Heyman. Qualifications:
  • Artist Faculty with extensive experience leading youth wind ensembles and/or concert bands
  • Ability to train and inspire a diverse group of young musicians, with a demonstrated track record of preparing student ensembles for performances that demonstrate their highest potential
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and classroom management skills
  • Extensive knowledge of wind ensemble repertoire
  • Ability to articulate and execute a forward-looking vision for a youth wind ensemble
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging and culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, and administrators) with diplomacy and tact
  • Understanding of the values and mission of The Juilliard School
