Job Type Full-timeDescriptionSUMMARYThe Music Director for the Diocese of Orlando and Cathedral is a professional who holds specialized credentials in sacred music and has a thorough understanding of Roman Catholic liturgy. This person of faith is responsible for the development, oversight, and evaluation of music programs throughout the diocese. They are to be gifted with a vision of how the local Church can enhance the beauty of the liturgy through proper selection and performance of liturgical music. Understanding the Cathedral Churchis the Bishop's church, as well as a parish community, the Music Director is responsible for the recruitment, formation, and direction of music ministers in support of the liturgies of the St. James Cathedral parish community.The Diocese of Orlando four core values lay the foundation for the work performed by its employees.1. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.Pastoral Musician as Person of Faith As a pastoral minister, the musician has the responsibility to nurture his or her own faith in order to nurture the faith of others.Pastoral Musician as Professional Person Commitment to professional development is a mutual responsibility of the musician and the parish. To maintain a competent level of professionalism, the responsibility of the pastoral musician includes:
- Practices to improve or maintain skills in voice, conducting, and the instruments upon which the musician is expected to perform as it relates to diocesan and parish duties.
- Researches and masters liturgical music;
- Pursues educational advancement in musical and liturgical skills that relate to the diocese and parish's need (e.g., organ, choral directing, vocal pedagogy);
- Keeps current with official statements and documents on music, liturgy, and the pastoral field;
- Studies various liturgical and musical publications;
- Member of professional organizations and attendance at national conferences and workshops;
- Periodic coursework in the field of pastoral liturgy and liturgical music.
- Facilitates the gathering and networking of parish music directors.
- Serves as Diocesan liaison on the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.
- Promotes good public relations both within and beyond the cathedral and diocese.
- Active involvement in ecumenical, cluster, deanery, and diocesan networks of professional peers.
Pastoral Musician as Administrator The responsibility of the pastoral musician as an administrator involves:
- Makes liturgical music policies in conjunction with the Liturgy Commission and pastoral staff, taking into consideration Diocesan and national guidelines;
- Formulates a music budget for the diocese and cathedral music programs;
- Develops and maintains a liturgical music library of various styles and genres for assembly, choir, cantor and instrumentalists;
- Maintains the diocesan and cathedral's musical instruments;
- Monitors and oversees Cathedral sound system components during liturgies and communicates equipment failures and solutions to the facilities manager.
- Makes recommendations for purchase of new instruments, sound equipment, hymnals and supplies.
- Secures other musicians as needed for diocesan and parish celebrations, such as ordinations, retreats, Christmas, Easter, Confirmation, etc.
Pastoral Musician as Educator The responsibility of the pastoral musician as an Educator involves:
- Serves as a resource consultant for diocesan and parish concerns regarding music, forming clergy, ministers of music, and congregations in understanding the role of sacred music in worship.
- Keeps abreast of current developments in liturgy and music, and directs music ministers to available education, training, workshops, and formation opportunities.
- Provides liturgical music formation and practical preparation for liturgical celebration for cantors/leaders of song, choral, and instrumental groups.
- Facilitates professional development of music directors, including national certification.
- Schedules ample time to practice improving their skills in voice, conducting, and instruments.

Musical leadership requires skills in the following areas: keyboard, voice and conducting. Skills and experience may be required in other areas such as contemporary instrumental ensembles, orchestration, hand bells, children's choirs, composition and familiarity with musical styles of various cultures within the community. A thorough understanding of Roman Catholic liturgical Theology and praxis. Knowledge of the history and repertoire of sacred music.ORGANIZATIONAL/INTERPERSONAL SKILLSA high level of organizational and interpersonal skill is required.LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION SKILLSRequires excellent written and oral communication skills. Bilingual in Spanish and English a plus. Must be able to work well with various personalities within the Catholic Church and be comfortable around many levels of support within a large, complex, and diverse working environment. Ability to read and analyze written and electronic correspondence and compose appropriate responses utilizing others in the organization when appropriate. Ability to effectively present verbal and written information to constituencies and public groups.WORKING CONDITIONSThe Music Director should demonstrate the ability to:1. Cooperate with and implement directives from supervisor;2. Proficient in organ, piano, and conducting;3. Develops the musicianship of cantors and other musicians;4. Nurtures musicianship of the youth;5. Leads and animates the community's sung prayer;6. Works in collaboration with other ministers of the diocese and parish.WORKING CONDITIONSThe working hours of this position are not limited to an 8-hour day. This person will need to be available in the evening and weekends, as needed. Must be willing to work in conditions of stress and function well under pressure.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSThe ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar. Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (15 pounds).
