Job Description:

The Mayor's Youth Leadership Council is a youth, civic leadership initiative designed to educate students about their government, community organizations and service-led projects.

This is an unpaid volunteer position. Student volunteers must be currently enrolled in high school or entering 9th grade with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0. Student must be a resident citizen living within the corporate limits of the City of Akron. Submission of a copy of the student's school transcript is required at time of application.

A student accepted will participate in leadership training and activities that will prepare them to advocate on youth issues, become active problem solvers, and champions for change with a voice in decisions of city government.

Volunteers must be willing to commit one (1) year of service to MYLC. Willing to represent peers in communication with the Mayor, city administrators, and community leaders. Volunteers must have a desire to learn more about how city government works and grow as a leader. Volunteers must attend mandatory new member's orientation and complete a minimum of 12 hours of community service within twelve (12) months after new member orientation.

To be considered a member in good standing, volunteers must attend a minimum of six (6) program meetings within twelve (12) months after new member orientation, participate in MYLC community service projects, serve on committees, attend leadership training, and other MYLC networking opportunities and events.

Student volunteers must be dependable, punctual and able to work with a diverse group of students. Volunteers must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, and perform community service activities comparable to member's skill level.
