POSITION DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Narcotics/Gang Investigator LOCATION: Clarksdale, Mississippi DEPARTMENT: Clarksdale Police Department REPORTS TO: Gang Task Force and Investigations Director DATE: August 29, 2024 Job Summary: The Narcotics/Gang Investigator is responsible for the investigation of illegal distribution and manufacture of controlled substances and the investigation of gang-related crimes. The Narcotics/Gang Investigator gathers intelligence, and maintains information on drug trafficking and distribution and gang activity to address and solve street narcotic and gang-related problems within the City. Key Responsibilities: Legal Compliance: Maintain knowledge of and strict adherence to laws and regulations of Federal, State and City governments as they relate to narcotics and gang investigations and law enforcement. Surveillance: Discreetly observe and document the activities of local gangs and suspected drug traffickers for the purpose of pursuing targeted narcotics distribution and trafficking and/or other criminal gang activities. Enforcement : Execute search warrants to seize, drugs, drug paraphernalia, weapons and other illegal gang-related contraband. Investigative : Investigate, and interview persons suspected of illegal sale or use of narcotics or other organized crime activity. Evidence Collection: Identify, compile and preserve all case-related records, substances, paraphernalia, weapons, and other illegal gang-related contraband critical to the prosecution of criminal offence, including, but not limited to chain of custody. Analytical: Analize substances using field kits, chemical tests and laboratory resources to identify illegal drugs and other substances related to the prosecution of criminal offences Communication: Maintain effective informant, community and intra and interagency communication. Qualifications: Education: Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Public Administration, or a related field. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years of progressive experience in law enforcement, with at least 2 years in narcotics or gang investigations. Skills:. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work under pressure and handle high-stress situations. Proficiency in using investigative tools, databases, and technology. Knowledge: Deep understanding of gang structures, criminal behavior, and investigative techniques. Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in criminal justice. Work Conditions: Environment: Office setting with frequent fieldwork, including high-risk situations. May require evening and weekend work, as well as occasional travel. Physical Demands: Ability to handle physical tasks associated with law enforcement operations and investigations. Must be able to respond to emergency situations and Special Requirements : Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid state driver's license without record of suspension or revocation in any state; Ability to pass Clarksdale Police Department's physical agility test; Must never have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor. Must have successfully completed State Basic Training Academy or equivalency test within one year after employment.
