This is accomplished by maintaining storerooms; submitting bids and creating requisitions for ordering supplies and equipment; preparing and setting up laboratory exercises and materials; installing, maintaining, calibrating and repairing equipment and facilities; and providing for safety and security in laboratories. Other duties include serving on departmental and College committees, assisting in preparation of grant proposals, unit plans, departmental reviews, and new program development. Work closely with Departmental Safety Committee to maintain chemical inventory, ensure safe and legal collection and disposal of hazardous wastes and assist in ensuring compliance with the Department's Chemical Hygiene plan.Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or closely related field.One year laboratory related experience.Successful experience assisting faculty in organization of laboratory courses.Required Job Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesKnowledge in chemical and bio-hazard safety, material safety data sheets (MSDS), storage, and disposal. Must be able to carry out standard preparatory protocols associated with reagents/specimens for freshman and sophomore chemistry/biology/biotechnology laboratories.Excellent organizational and communication skills. Proficiency in the use of computers.Preferred QualificationsMaster of Science or postgraduate in Biology, Chemistry or closely related field.Experience as a laboratory supervisor.Special Instructions to ApplicantsThis is a security-sensitive position. The College is committed to diversity in its workforce.Job DutiesMaintains storerooms organizing glassware, equipment, supplies, and chemicals; maintaining inventory; performing or directing cleaning of glassware, materials, and the storeroom; collecting and preparing stock solutions, containers, and labels; and preparing documentation for student workers and directing their activities.Orders supplies and equipment by maintaining watch on inventories of all glassware, consumable supplies, chemicals, and equipment and determining when and what to order; seeking vendor information in materials and equipment, preparing comparison tables; preparing requests for price quotes; preparing materials for submission to purchasing department for bid proposals; maintaining ledgers of accounts and standing orders, reviewing and tracking order; communicating with Chair, Dean, and Purchasing Department; and assisting and advising Chair on budget development issues and assisting in monitoring budget progress.Prepares laboratory exercises and materials by analyzing written procedures to determine chemicals and equipment needed; preparing containers, solutions and assembling material for labs; setting up materials in labs; preparing handouts and duplicating for classes; preparing standards and unknowns, standardizing solutions; calibrating instruments and equipment drawer check-out materials for each lab.Assists faculty with class instruction by securing or preparing handouts for classes and labs; procuring and providing demonstration materials, charts, and software for faculty.Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment and facilities by performing calibration checks and routine preventative maintenance on equipment; replacing filters and columns and performing maintenance on distilled water system; changing locks on student equipment drawers, stripping bench tops and applying protective coatings; troubleshooting equipment issues; and making small repairs on other equipment and materials.Provides for safety and security in laboratories by monitoring and interpreting federal, state, and local laws and regulations concerning chemical, biological, and physical safety and communicating to faculty and staff; maintaining required records of compliance with above; collecting and preparing for disposal of hazardous waste generated in laboratories; maintaining eyewash and shower stations and testing for operations; assisting faculty in disseminating safety training to students; preparing and maintaining Laboratory Compliance Plan and Dept.
