Under the Fair Labor and Standards Act this position is non-exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Frederick County Public School System. Please see linked salary scale for the full range. Role The Network Administrator I provides technical direction and support of all communication (LAN/MAN) systems infrastructure, including requirements, planning and implementation of network infrastructure for buildings and systems. Performs network related duties with a primary focus on network access layer, distribution layer and server/desktop administration. Reporting directly to the Supervisor of Network Infrastructure and Security, this position falls under the Department of Technology Infrastructure's, Network Infrastructure and Security division. Essential Functions
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of network infrastructure including LAN, network resources server/desktop infrastructure and systems management. This includes scheduling upgrades and maintenance that minimally impact core business and instructional functions. Performs off hour upgrades, installing patches, service packs, maintenance releases, troubleshooting, etc.
  • Installs, configures, maintains and troubleshoots all network resources including LAN/MAN network infrastructure, servers/desktops, applications, network sub-systems, and IP communication links.
  • Implements and maintains network security as mandated by state, county, and internal requirements. Performs routine network audits and vulnerability assessments, verifies network security compliance as directed by management.
  • Performs multi-tiered incident, change management, problem resolution, and end-user support.
  • Monitors faults, performance, and capacity issues; prepares remediation reports and documentation.
  • Proactively researches, analyzes, identifies and resolves trends of utilization or errors and implement appropriate performance tuning and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Continuously identifies opportunities for process and quality improvement and implements applicable technologies and/or process changes.
  • Implement and configure highly available infrastructure including design and test of fail-over services, fault tolerance, disaster recovery, load balancing, etc.
  • Implement and configure systems management and proactive monitoring tools; troubleshoots and resolves identified telecommunication and network issues.
  • Implement and oversee backup systems. Protect all systems and end user data: schedule and maintain onsite and offsite backups, review backup logs, develop and maintain backup procedures, documenting recovery plans, and implement new backup technologies.
  • Document all network administration processes and installation procedures.
  • Interfaces with internal and external customers and vendors to determine network infrastructure needs.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Other Functions
  • Remain technically current and competent by learning new technologies and obtaining certifications as requested by management.
  • Manage and oversee network bills and services, manage purchasing of servers, distribution layer, access layer and related equipment, open and work with TAC cases to resolve issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Network Infrastructure and Security.
Required Qualifications
  • Associates Degree or equivalent certifications/training/experience in information technology, computer science, engineering or related field.
  • Three (3) years' full time experience providing network administration within a large scale Ethernet network infrastructure including experience administrating Windows and/or Linus servers.
  • Comptia Network+ or Cisco CCNA certification.
  • Two (2) years' experience installing, troubleshooting, implementing configurations and maintaining access and distribution layer network switches and/or routers and other network related equipment.
  • Experience with and ability to implement, configure and troubleshoot Windows Servers and services, Active Directory, network shares, desktop management, group policies, package, and distribute network based applications, etc.
  • Experience and broad knowledge of routing protocols, switch protocols, TCP/IP, QOS, VLANs, ACL's, DHCP, DNS, TFTP, SNMP, SMTP, POE, RFC's, Ethernet, and other network protocols, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with network monitoring tools, preferably Soarwinds and WUG.
  • Demonstrated experience performing and analyzing network packet captures using packet analyzers such as Wireshark.
  • Ability to work off-hours as needed/required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently and effectively complete work assignments and projects in a timely fashion.
  • Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with VMWare or other virtualization technologies.
  • Experience or good understanding of Microsoft SCCM or related desktop management technology.
  • Experience with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure or related technology.
  • Knowledge of storage environment and how it interrelates with network infrastructure.
  • Experience implementing high availability network systems and network load balancing.
  • Work experience in K-12 educational setting.
  • Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs.
