Position Type: Transportation/Non-CDL DriverDate Posted: 5/11/2023Location: Transportation DepartmentBRENHAM INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Title: Non-CDL Driver Exemption Status/Test: Nonexempt Reports to: Director of Transportation Date Revised: May 2023 Dept./School: Transportation Primary Purpose: Operate twelve (12) passenger bus and/or other white fleet vehicle and all related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation for students and other authorized persons to and from schools and other designated locations. This position is for new bus drivers working towards their CDL license and is a temporary assignment until the CDL is obtained. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Clear and valid Texas driver's license Must be at least 21 years of age Employee will have 45 days from the time of employment to obtain CDL Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug tests and agility test and annual physical
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Proficient map reading skills
Experience: None required. Major Responsibilities and Duties: 1. Operate twelve (12) passenger bus or other white fleet vehicle and all related equipment safely and effectively. 2. Follow the assigned route and adhere to established schedules. 3. Drive assigned vehicle to and from extracurricular activities. 4. Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure the vehicle can be operated safely and notify the supervisor of needed repairs. 5. Report all accidents/incidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete the required corresponding reports. 6. Complete and maintain accurate, updated, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported. 7. Keep assigned vehicle clean/neat and maintain the appropriate level of fuel. 8. Maintain effective behavior management control over groups of students; report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator. 9. Supervise students while they board and exit the vehicle and cross the street. 10. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and riding rules and regulations. 11. Perform emergency evacuation of students on vehicle if necessary. 12. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for motor vehicles. 13. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as but not limited to first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, flares, crowbar, and reflector. 14. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area that could cause an accident and inform the supervisor of any hazards that are not immediately correctable. 15. Report immediately any hazardous conditions along the route. 16. Anticipate problems such as traffic, students, weather, road conditions, schedule changes, etc., and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays. 17. Attend and complete required training programs. 18. Establish and maintain good rapport with students, parents, school personnel, and co-workers. 19. Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office and other drivers. 20. Assist other drivers when necessary. 21. May be assigned to work as a bus aide when necessary. Supervisory Responsibilities: NoneEquipment Used: 12 - passenger bus; motor vehicle; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher. Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reaching Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (25 pounds or less) Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; occasional district wide travel. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures (hot) and vehicle fumes. Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress Occasional districtwide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
