Non-Certified Stress Technician

The Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute Stress Lab offers an exciting setting for Stress Technicians, performing over 11,000 stress tests each year. A wide array of patients, including healthy preventive testing to more complicated cases involving many types of cardiac and pulmonary diseases, provide a challenging and educational experience. Stress Technicians assist with performance of exercise and pharmacologic stress tests.
A caregiver in this position works 7:30AM-4:00PM or 8:00AM-4:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
* Assist with performing graded exercise tests.
* Provide appropriate instructions and patient education regarding stress testing.
* Process reports.
* Conduct cardiac risk factor screening for patients.
* Perform preliminary patient assessments.
* Review for test appropriateness, medications, risk factors, age and test order.
* Collect height and weight measurements.
* Interview patient for pertinent medical history, signs and symptoms.
* Prepare patients for stress tests, such as EKG prep, explaining the test and connecting patients to the stress monitoring symptom.
* Notify test supervisor of patient readiness and provide the test supervisor with a review of the patient's history.
* Obtain BP and EKG at rest and during exercise, assist with monitoring patients during the stress test and recovery period, disconnecting patients from the monitoring system and escorting them back.
* Enter test data, clarify inaccuracies and submit the report.
* Clean equipment and instrumentation.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
* Completion of coursework from a recognized institution in basic science OR completion of an EKG course.
* One year of experience related to direct patient care, such as administering medical tests, medical procedures or other patient care functions.
* From coursework or on the job training, knowledge of EKG techniques and principles, including EKG prep, recognizing common cardiac rhythms and EKG changes, patient hook-up and EKG equipment operation.
* Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or willing to obtain within 90 days of employment.
* Ability to accurately auscultate rest and exercise blood pressure.
* Computer skills to utilize databases and programs.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
* Previous stress testing experience.
Physical Requirements:
* Requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
* Requires standing or walking for extensive periods of time. Requires normal or corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
* Ability to provide physical assistance to a patient during the testing procedure.
* May require some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
Personal Protective Equipment:
* Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
