About the Job

The person in this position will primarily analyze chemical and isotopic composition of natural and synthetic samples to reconstruct ancient Earth's environmental conditions and to understand fundamental processes that control the co-evolution of Earth's climate, environment, and life. The person will also synthesize and interpret the acquired data, and report the results during academic meetings and in the form of peer-reviewed publications.

1. Prepare and analyze chemical and isotopic composition of geological samples or other pertinent synthetic samples (70%)

2. Synthesize and interpret data, and write up for peer-reviewed publications (30%)

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

1. BS in Earth Sciences, Geochemistry, or other related fields

2. 2-years of experience in sample preparation in clean labs for high-precision concentration and isotopic ratio measurements

3. 2-years of experience in independent operation of ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS, and in troubleshooting

4. Experience in presenting scientific results during international meeting(s)

5. A track-record of publication in peer-reviewed journal(s)

About the Department

The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences is a vibrant interdisciplinary department whose faculty's research ranges from paleoclimate to deep earth dynamics. The Department is in the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences which also includes the Institute for Rock Magnetism, the Continental Scientific Drilling Coordination Facility, the Minnesota Geological Survey, and the Polar Geospatial Center. The majority of the School resides in John T. Tate Hall on the Minneapolis campus, with some labs on the St. Paul campus. Other affiliated research units at the University include the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory, the Institute on the Environment, and the BioTechnology Institute. www.cse.umn.edu/esci
