DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing unlicensed assistive patient care under the direct supervision of a Unit Manager or a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent performs personal care and basic patient care activities which are appropriate to their level of knowledge and skill. Part-time employment means work of less than fifty percent of the time prescribed in a normal work week (defined in Rule I(6) of the Rules for the Classified Civil Service of the County of Erie). Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Participates in patient care conferences;
Demonstrates familiarity with location, operation and maintenance of equipment and responds appropriately to life threatening emergencies;
Identifies and reports verbal, physical abuse and/or inappropriate behavior towards patients and staff members;
Relays patient report of pain to nurse immediately; assists nurse in implementing non-pharmacologic interventions for pain reduction;
Identifies changes in patient's skin, cognitive condition and behavior and notifies RN;
Documents and provides concise, relevant report on patients care received and current status to RN;
Administers oxygen therapy, including set-up and monitoring with RN supervision;
Performs specimen collection including veni puncture;
Cares for patient's personal need items such as eyeglasses, hearing aides, canes, wheelchairs and other adaptive devices; completes Patient Property Inventory and secures patient property according to ECMCC policy;
Performs personal patient care, including dressing and undressing patient, showering, bed baths, shaving, dressing, hair, nail and oral care, turning and positioning, transporting via and/or transferring to wheelchair, chair, stretcher or bed, including use of lifting equipment, assisting with ambulation, and range of motion exercises;
Compliant with policies and procedures regarding patient turning and positioning, restraints and infection control;
Provides for patients nutritional needs by passing and collecting diet trays and nourishment, setting up trays and adaptive feeding equipment, feeding patient or assisting as necessary;
Provides for patients elimination needs by assisting the patient with bed pan/urinal, bowel/bladder retaining, collection of test specimens, perineal and catheter care, and emptying drainage devices;
Monitors and obtains vital signs, temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, O2 saturation, height, weight, 12 lead EKG and notifies RN of changes;
Performs simple wound care and treatments, including simple dressing changes as directed;
Applies anti-thrombic stockings and ace wraps, non-complicated splints, abdominal compression pumps as ordered with RN supervision and assists and encourages patients in use of incentive spirometer;
Assists nurses with post-mortem care;
Distributes clean linens and makes beds;
Monitors stock supplies and notifies appropriate staff for ordering replacements;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be enrolled in a school of professional/registered nursing, of which included completion of two (2) semesters of clinical rotation.
NOTE: Your school must be accredited by a regional, national or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved ECMCC provider within sixty days (60) of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
