Job DescriptionPosition SummaryUnder the direction of the Vice President for Patient Services, the Nurse Manager assumes 24-hour responsibility in managing the human and material resources of the Nursing Unit to provide quality patient care and an environment conducive to personnel growth and satisfaction. He/she is responsible for knowledge of and contribution to departmental and organizational goals and for assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating all aspects of patient care. The Nurse Manager promotes cooperation, a positive attitude and creates a safe environment for both patients and personnel. He/she is responsible for knowing and adhering to established hospital policies and procedures, including all aspects of safety.Duties of a Nurse Manager may include the following but are not limited to:
- Serve as a role model and leader to staff, behaving in a way that is consistent with Hospital values and sets a positive example
- Collaborates and cooperates across departments and disciplines to solve problems and facilitate processes
- Fosters open, direct communication between personnel, patients, and physicians for the betterment of patient care and the professional environment
- Responsible for the direction, supervision, and coordinator of all nursing activities relating to patient care in his/her unit
- Enforces high patient care standards and satisfaction
- Acts as a teacher and mentor to staff, helping personnel to develop global perspectives, critical thinking, and clinical skills
- Ensures adequate resources through accurate forecasting and close monitoring of supplies
- Monitors operating and capital expenditures, including equipment, payroll, and overtime usage
- Acts as the decision maker and takes responsibility for both the successes and the failures of a unit
Required Qualifications:
- Current licensure to practice professional nursing in New York State
- Minimum 5 years experience in Emergency Department and/or Critical Care
- Progressive leadership experience
- Willingness for continued learning
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and multitasking skills
- Standing/walking 50% of the time
- Ability to occasionally lift heavy objects
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in nursing
- BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications through the American Heart Association
- TNCC certification
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters degree in nursing or related field

- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton's Employee Health Services*
- Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen*
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
