DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The nurse practitioner (NP) works in collaboration with the OB/GYN physicians within the scope of practice guidelines agreed upon by the collaborating parties. Provide evaluation and treatment of new patients, follow-up patients and postoperative patients in the clinical setting. SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the Office and/or Practice Manager RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Evaluation and treatment of established OB patients in the clinical setting. Evaluation and treatment of established GYN patients in the clinical setting. Evaluation and treatment of Contraception therapy; Well Women Annual, in the clinical setting. Coordinate care of patients with the appropriate physician. Interpretation of test results, scans and clinic procedures. Referring patients as appropriate. Conduct hospital rounds, write orders, and take call for the OB/GYN physician. Evaluate and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement a treatment plan for hospitalized patients, dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals. Order, prescribe, dispense, and administer medication that may be allowed by state legislation. Be available for OB/GYN call, to include weekend and holiday rotations, with other mid-level providers within the group. Document detailed information in patient chart. Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of required job information. Must be proficient with EMR software. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally. Strong interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider policies and protocols at a department and campus/system level. EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE Graduate of an approved formal education program preparing nurse practitioners and physician Assistants. Extensive knowledge of physical assessment, differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, pharmacology and management of acute and chronic patient/family problems. Twelve hours continuing education or in-service hours required annually. Currently licensed in the State of Louisiana as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician's Assistant; Certified or certification eligible by the American Nurses Association as a primary care nurse Practitioner or the National Committee on Certification of Physicians Assistants; BCLS certification required, ACLS, NALS preferred. Ability to communicate with patient, family peers and medical personnel. Requires emotional stability and resilience. Must be adaptable to change, be decisive and demonstrate foresight. Exhibits organizational and leadership ability. Physical Demands/Work Environment Work requires a variety of physical activities, including moving about within and outside of all hospital properties for long periods of time. Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergent situations. May be required to assist in controlling disorderly conduct or combative patients. Must be able to exchange accurate information with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
