Job Description:

HOURLY RANGE: $59.185 - $80.077 DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:The work involves providing expanded rehabilitative nursing services to patients at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent provides a variety of medical services to patients in both an inpatient and outpatient setting in accordance with established laws and hospital procedures.The incumbent works in collaboration with members of the health care team to provide, enhance or improve health care delivery by evaluating patients' response to medical and nursing care, developing best practices and implementing evidenced based standards of care, providing consultative services and assessing and addressing patient and staff educational needs.Work is performed under the general direction of a physician and the Vice President of Rehabilitation or other higher level professional nursing administrator.Supervision is exercised over nursing, technical and paraprofessional staff.Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Provides patients with rehabilitation services, medical assistance and counseling on health related problems in an inpatient or outpatient setting;
  • Obtains medical and social histories and performs comprehensive physical examinations; makes diagnoses and prescribes therapeutic regimens;
  • Ensures admission, daily and transfer orders are completed in a timely manner; revises orders as needed;
  • Completes patient history and physical; assesses, documents and orders preventive and/or treatment measures as indicated;
  • Obtains samples and specimens for appropriate laboratory analysis and reviews results;
  • Provides first-aid and performs minor surgical procedures, treatment services and other medical support roles under the direction of a physician;
  • Initiates orders for diagnostic studies, medications and referrals to specialists;
  • Identifies and documents critical deviations in patient condition, initiates treatment orders and notifies physician;
  • Conducts follow-up examinations of patients;
  • Screens patients to assess need for immediate care or referral to other health personnel;
  • Monitors and operates medical equipment as needed;
  • Orders and Administers medication and drugs in accordance with established policies and procedures;
  • Documents in patient charts and maintains detailed records of patient treatment;
  • Ensures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, coordination of services and education;
  • Maintains appropriate records and prepares reports, making suggestions and recommendations on therapeutic and nursing problems;
  • Provides input into the formulation of patient care standards;
  • Responds to life threatening emergencies;
  • Provides health education and prevention programs;
  • Ensures that departmental and interdepartmental policies, procedures, objectives and standards of care are maintained;
  • Attends meetings, seminars and information sessions related to professional activities.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of health principles, practices and techniques; thorough knowledge of physical examination and diagnosis procedures, equipment and skill in performing such examinations and procedures; good knowledge of regulations, laws and requirements of regulatory agencies as they relate to rehabilitation services;good knowledge of current developments, literature and sources of information in the field of rehabilitation services; ability to work effectively on a multi-disciplinary team; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to supervise and train others; ability to prepare oral and written reports; sound professional judgment; initiative; resourcefulness; dependability; confidentiality; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Master's Degree* in Nursing and either:
  • One (1) year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in Rehabilitation, Neurology, Neurosurgery or related field; or:
  • One (1) year of registered professional nursing experience in Rehabilitation, Neurology or Neurosurgery or related field.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Possession of a current license and registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
    • Possession of a current New York State Department of Education license as a Nurse Practitioner that specifies specialty area of practice at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
    • Possession of a Nurse Practitioner certification as issued by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) at time of appointment and maintenance of certification throughout duration of appointment; and
    • Possession of a current Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number issued by the United State Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of employment.; and
    • Possession of a certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from an ECMCC approved provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
