General Description and Qualifications A. The School Nurse administers health care to students and provides health leadership in establishing a complete and effective health program for the school. The nurse reports directly to the building principal. B. The School Nurse should have the following qualifications:

  • Committed Christian with a close personal walk with the Lord, maintained through personal routines (such as prayer and reading the Bible) and in the school setting (through regular participation in Prayer and Share devotional times and other spiritual development)
  • Possesses Christian character qualities to serve as a role model for young people and readiness to share faith in Christ with students as part of our school's mission
  • Regular in attendance at an evangelical Protestant church
  • Commitment to a biblical lifestyle, not promoting or engaging in premarital, extramarital, transgender, or homosexual behavior
  • If married, a solid commitment based on Mark 10:9 and positive marital relationship
  • A strong commitment to Christian education
  • RN degree (with a current Commonwealth of Virginia R.N. License)
  • Computer and clerical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Compassionate, supportive spirit in working with students and staff members
  • Highly organized and efficient
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Teachable, servant spirit
  • Requirements A. School Nurse Responsibilities 1. Compiles and maintains the cumulative health record for each student in the building to assure accurate and complete health records are available 2. Provides emergency or immediate first aid to students and staff and initiates the incident/accident report as needed and follows-up on all personnel injured on school property 3. Assists with the development of emergency procedures to provide care that minimizes the effects of accidents and illnesses in the school 4. Acts as the school resource person for health information and instruction 5. Maintains a daily record of students seen in the clinic and treatment administered; communicates with parent and administration as needed 6. Completes reports as required by school procedures and state regulations 7. Manages medication brought to school by parents and administers per medication permission form as directed by physician and permission from parent 8. Maintains adequate supplies in school clinic 9. Prepares confidential health alert list, advises teachers and staff of special needs of students to ensure their health and safety in the classroom; provides training to teachers and staff as needed on specific health issues (asthma, seizure care, epi-pens, diabetes, etc.) 10. Works with teachers to develop safety plans for students with special healthcare needs (food allergies, asthma, epilepsy, etc.) 11. Maintains first aid kits for bus drivers 12. Prepares medications needed for staff to administer to students on field trips and provides appropriate training to staff member on medication administration while on field trip 13. Works with administration to develop policies to improve health care B. Skills/Knowledge/Abilities 1. Health procedures and practices 2. School clinic operations 3. Medication side effects 4. BLS CPR 5. State laws regarding immunizations and contagious diseases 6. Assess student medical needs 7. Enforce state immunization laws 8. Exclude students with contagious diseases 9. Provide OSHA in-service for faculty 10. Provide regular health and services to students 11. Provide emergency care for students and staff 12. Discern when outside medical assistance in necessary
