Job Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director of Nursing, the Nursing Administrator Coordinator (NAC) assists with planning, controlling, and coordinating administrative and office operations within the nursing department. The NAC supports the nursing education and quality assurance/quality improvement teams by ensuring compliance with credentialing and various measures related to the provision of services in the NYC jail system.

Responsibilities and Examples of Typical Tasks:

  • Interdepartmental communication with to plan and coordinate joint patient and management objectives. Acts as a liaison between the Nursing Department and other administrative divisions.
  • Provides administrative supervision for a program of comprehensive health service of professional and non-professional staff involving nurses, therapists, and related health personnel.
  • Maintains accurate employee files, contact information, and credentialing.
  • Facilitates personnel actions in collaboration with human resources, nursing education, and nursing leadership.
  • Plans and coordinates training programs to maintain staff proficiency in the use of new equipment, topics, and methods.
  • Participates in budgetary planning, reviews operating costs, performs cost studies, and prepares department budgets.
  • Supports the quality assurance/quality improvement team by ensuring compliance with various measures related to the provision of services in the NYC jail system.
  • Coordinates research projects and conducts special studies to evaluate various programs in the department and within the overall objective of the department.
  • Directs the processing of orders for requisitioning of equipment and supplies.
  • As required, consult with medical, nursing, and other staff involved in treatment to clarify ambiguities and secure documentation of the records and to secure necessary and timely certification and verification.
  • Ensures that compliance manuals are current and that policies and procedures are followed.
  • May represent the Department Administrator in external contacts with community groups, organizations, and agencies when directed.
  • Supervises the office administration and office record-keeping activities of the department.
  • Is responsible for employee supervision, performance, and employee development of assigned personnel in areas of responsibility and accountability.
  • Supervises the preparation and publication of operational manuals and procedures.

Qualification Requirements:

  • A Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Public Administration, Business Administration, Social Work, Psychology, or Rehabilitation Counseling; and
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience in medically-oriented health care and medical support systems environment, one (1) year of which included experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or two (2) years of responsible level experience in business management systems or general administration including one (1) year in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or
  • A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines listed in 1 above; and
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience, as described in 2 above, including two (2) years of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity in occupations, as listed in 2 above.
  • Department Preferences

    • Proficiency in MS Office products is required.
    • Familiarity with Kronos scheduling system is preferred.
    • Must be a highly organized, self-motivated, team player with excellent time management, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated competence and leadership traits - e.g. decision-making ability and skills in problem-solving, communication, and priority-setting.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. A Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Public Administration, Business Administration, Social Work, Psychology or Rehabilitation Counseling; and

    2. Two (2) years of full-time experience in medically-oriented health care and medical support systems environment, one (1) year of which included experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity in such occupations as physical, occupational, inhalation, speech and audiology therapy or as Medical/Laboratory Technologist, Microbiologist (various specialties), Chemist (biochemist), Radiation and X-Ray Technician; or two (2) years of responsible level experience in business management systems or general administration including one (1) year in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or

    3. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines listed in 1 above; and

    4. Three (3) years of full-time experience, as described in 2 above, including two (2) years of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity in occupations, as listed in 2 above; or

    5. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.

    Note: Certification or licensure may be required.
