Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and withinhospital and department policies and procedures assists in caring for patientsand/or families from admission to discharge.
DEFINTION:
A nursing assistant is a paraprofessional trained to providepersonal care and related health care and assistance to individuals who aresick disabled or infirm and who are residents of or receiving services fromhealth care facilities or agencies licensed by the state and holds a license asa nursing assistant issued by the Department of Health.

Duties of Nursing Assistants
Collaborate with Registered Nurse to organize work and setpriorities. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse performs:
1. PersonalCare Skills
2. BasicNursing Assistant Skills: As outlined by the Rhode Island Department of HealthProfessional Licensing and Facility Regulation.
3. RehabilitationSkills: Assists therapists and assistants in treatment when necessary including positioning mobilizing and exercising patients and with group programs. Performs daily activities of living ambulates patient as appropriate.
Transports patients and records to and from treatment areas exercising care in the handling of patients.
4. Maintenanceof Safe Environment: Reports unsafe conditions/situations to Registered Nursemanager or supervisor; reports equipment in need of repair and removes fromservice.
5. Recognitionof and Reporting Signs and Symptoms: Communicates all pertinent patientobservations to the Registered Nurse.
6. Safety:Maintains quality assurance and infection control in accordance withestablished hospital and department policies procedures and objectives.Accurately documents data in the EHR patient care flowsheet clinical datarecords; demonstrates ability to perform responsibilities in emergency/codesituations. May function as a patient observer.
Performs other related duties as required.
Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Current Rhode Island license as a Nursing Assistant.
High school graduate or its equivalent preferred.
Ability to perform basic computer skills.
Certified in American Heart Association Healthcare ProviderBasic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide careto patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processeshuman development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the careprocess.
EXPERIENCE:
One-year experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
Works in healthcare environments such as acute carehospitals physicians offices and ancillary health care enterprises.Prolonged sitting standing and walking. Repeated bending squatting andstooping. May be required to lift/turn patients and equipment.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse withinthe scope of hospital and department policies and practices and the RhodeIsland Department of Health Professional Licensing and Facility Regulation.
Refers specific complex problems to supervisor whereclarification of department policies and procedures may be required.
