ResponsibilitiesThe Nursing Supervisor is responsible for the coordination and supervision of hospital and patient care services. The Nursing Supervisor will provide leadership for clinical excellence, personnel management, resource management, fiscal accountability and maintenance of positive working relationships with staff, physicians, patients, visitors, volunteers, community agency representatives and the public. The Nursing Supervisor participates in nursing and hospital-wide activities to achieve departmental and organizational goals. The Nursing Supervisor makes decisions and acts in the absence of Nursing Management and/or hospital administration. All job duties are performed in a manner that demonstrates the organization's values of teamwork, compassion, integrity, respect, and accountability.
Demonstrates effective leadership skills. From 7AM- 3PM on Monday through Friday the Nursing Supervisor will primarily concentrate on Bed Management and Bed Coordination. During off shift hours, holidays, and weekends, the Nursing Supervisor makes decisions and acts in the absence of nursing management and/or hospital administration. Partners with the Nurse Managers, Department Heads, and Human Resources with all issues related to the performance management process.While communicating with Nurse Managers, Clinical Coordinators and all nursing staff, the Nursing Supervisor displays behavior that enhances the image of the organization as evidenced by professional and courteous behavior and positive communication style.When communicating with patients, families and co-worker, the Nursing Supervisor will exhibit care, compassion and use active listening skills.Responds to all hospital emergency situations, provides appropriate direction, effectively intervenes to resolve situations, and informs department heads and administrator on call.Serves as the decision maker for implementation of High Census Alert . Will initiate, coordinate, and implement per hospital policy. Communicates with the Emergency Department frequently to facilitate ED throughput by evaluating patient flow allowing for timely admissions and discharges. Demonstrates diverse clinical knowledge regarding patient care need.Serves as a resource in problem solving, patient assessment, and in providing clinical direction to staff.Collaborates with the managers, clinical coordinators and staffing coordinator to ensure appropriate staffing coverage during Flash rounds at 11AM, 5PM and 5AM. Works with the Staffing Coordinator in assessing staffing for the current and on-coming shifts. Ensures appropriate staffing coverage based on census, acuity, patient need, and organizational goalsAssesses and collaborates with nurse managers and clinical coordinators in proper placement, utilization, and continuous assessment of patient care attendants and Remote Video Monitoring. Develops and maintains effective communication mechanisms with Nursing/Hospital Administration, Clinical Resource Manager, Resource Nurse, staff, physicians, patients/families and other departments.Participates in department process improvement activities. Processes occurrence reports and patient complaints per hospital policy. Demonstrates competency in clinical judgment and knowledge of skills in the assessment of patients based on their age specific needs. Maintains confidentiality of patient and employee information in verbal, written and electronic information.Attends nursing supervisor/resource nurse/staffing coordinator meetings and nursing management meetings as requestedQualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing is highly preferred.
- Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut.
- ACLS certification is required.
- Critical care experience preferred
- Prior leadership experience is required.
- Requires knowledge of theories, principles and concepts acquired through a minimum of 4 years in clinical nursing.
- This position requires the knowledge to apply admission criteria to all admissions based on generally recognized standards, i.e. Medicare
