SUMMARY

The Nutrition Specialist develops and implements nutrition-related services, processes, and programs, including coordinating nutrition education, supporting Food as Medicine initiatives, and providing recipe and menu consultation and approval. Responsibilities may include creating and approving menus, developing, testing, and conducting nutrient analysis for Medically Tailored Meals, conducting intake for neighbors in our Medically Tailored Meal program, identifying ways to creatively promote health and nutrition initiatives, developing and supporting processes that support good nutrition (such as SWAP), coordinating health care partnerships (produce distributions and pantries/Food as Medicine clinics), and overseeing nutrition education with partner programs and agencies and at GCFB sites.

Requirements:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. This list is not all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

  • Support our Medically Tailored Meals pilot and program by developing recipes, conducting nutrient analysis, and working with the nutrition and kitchen teams to ensure delicious and health supportive meals.
  • Support our Medically Tailored Meals pilot by conducting neighbor/client onboarding consisting of nutrition assessments/intake interviews and providing ongoing nutrition education and support such as Medical Nutrition Therapy.
  • Help to educate partner agencies and their clients on the importance of making healthy food choices and increase their knowledge and consumption of nutritious foods available at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.
  • Provide information and education to partners on planning their food acquisition efforts to better optimize the quantity and quality of food offered to their clients.
  • Work with Food Bank staff to develop and update nutrition education curriculum that responds to changing needs of programs and their clients. Develop and implement new programs as needed.
  • Conduct outreach to partner agencies by facilitating nutrition workshops on meal planning, recipe development, nutrition, label reading, healthy eating on a budget, cooking demonstrations and other nutrition workshops that provide support to member programs.
  • Work with and help to oversee contracted and volunteer Nutrition Educators. Maintain accurate records and coordinate quarterly meetings with paid nutrition educators. Facilitate volunteer nutrition education at GCFB sites such as the Community Resource Center
  • Help to manage and coordinate Food as Medicine partnerships, including mobile pantries (produce distributions), pantries (food as medicine clinics), including onboarding, compliance, and order management
  • Review Foods to Encourage (FTE) framework and develop strategies and food bank policies to make FTE available, accessible, and attractive
  • Create and review monthly menu selections for children and senior meals and ensure compliance with dietary and nutrition guidelines established by government sources (i.e. Older American's Act, CACFP, SFSP).
  • Conducts periodic site visits of Food Bank partners to ensure compliance with Food Bank standards.
  • Work in cooperation with other Food Bank staff to address agency satisfaction with nutrition outreach. Work with Manager of Nutrition Initiatives and Director of Community Health and Research to develop and administer assessment and outcomes processes.
  • Assist in development of budget recommendations reflecting product promotion and nutrition education efforts, to ensure that they meet our operational objectives.
  • Maintain required job knowledge and skills and core professional competencies. Attend and participate in required educational programs, staff and community meetings.
  • Develop nutrition curricula for special projects and populations, such as pregnancy, heart disease, diabetes, etc.
  • Work with/mentor dietetic interns and other students, Americorps members, Americorps vistas, and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Work with GCFB kitchen to develop recipes and menus that are appropriate for nutrition goals and initiatives, and adherent to USDA and state nutrition standards when applicable
  • Actively support and champion initiatives aimed at driving continuous improvement throughout the organization. May participate in one of the following: LEAN council, a kaizen, 5S campaign or other process improvement efforts to support continuous improvement and improved processes within the food bank.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition from a 4-year college or university; two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in community nutrition, dietetics and /or food service and experience in group facilitation. Registered Dietitian (R.D) is strongly preferred but a Registered Diet Technician is also acceptable. Valid driver's license. Must possess excellent customer service skills and communication skills to effectively work in an environment of highly diverse people. Must possess strong analytic skills and ability to manipulate data within an operating system. Must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Must possess strong attention to detail and have the ability to prioritize and multi-task with multiple priorities. Proficiency in Windows based computer software, specifically MS Office Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Comfort with web site design and promotion will be necessary. Work schedule flexibility; evenings and/or weekends as necessary. Physical Requirements and Environment

The physical requirements for this position include: Ability to remain in a near constant stationary position. Ability to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. frequently. Ability to operate a computer or other office productivity machinery constantly. Ability to ascend/descend stairs to access workspaces on seldom occasions. Ability to position or move body to access filing cabinets or other work equipment on seldom occasions. Ability to constantly exchange accurate information and communicate in person or via telephone with clients, partners, donors, coworkers and other members of the community. Must be able to constantly view a computer screen. Ability to move office equipment/supplies occasionally. Ability to lift 25-50lbs on a regular basis. Travel is occasionally required for this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Salary Range: $55,000 per year
