This posting will be used to fill current vacancies in the Line Maintenance Division of the Utilities Department, and the Investigations Division of the Police Department. However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies, including vacancies in other departments, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. The Office Assistant classification is responsible for general office procedures, special projects, data entry, records management and providing other advanced level clerical support to a work section or division. The duties performed require previously acquired skills, knowledge, and abilities. Essential job functions include: performing stenographic work and/or transcribing information from electronic dictation equipment to produce general office correspondence, consisting of, memoranda, reports, minutes, and other informational data; typing complex documents, such as, narrative and statistical reports, special correspondence, etc., from rough draft to final copy; ensuring the usage of proper format, grammar, spelling, and punctuation for the documents produced; gathering or compiling and exchanging information used in reports regarding unit activities; operating standard office equipment, including personal computers, photocopy machines, calculators, typewriters, etc.; exchanging information with citizens, agency representatives, or other City personnel by telephone and face-to-face; maintaining alphabetical and numerical files; and performing other clerical tasks as assigned. The Office Assistant may provide stenographic/clerical support for several staff members in a division/section and may be frequently exposed to confidential information. The employee must be willing to assume responsibility for maintaining confidentiality. The work assignments are received in verbal and written form and are reviewed by the supervisor for accuracy. VETERANS PREFERENCEHonorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Primarily indoors, subject to sitting, standing, walking, or using a telephone for extended periods.
  • Subject to continuous exposure to light and glare from objects such as personal computer monitors, microfilm machines, etc.
  • Subject to frequent low level noise from objects such as a keyboards, ten-keys, copying machines, telephones and other office equipment.
Note: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.   • Arm-hand steadiness and manual finger dexterity enough to operate equipment such as keyboards, ten-keys, telephones, etc. and to file documents.
  • Near vision enough to read and verify information such as written and machine generated documents, reports, etc.
  • Speech and hearing enough to communicate in person and by telephone.
