The substitute teacher is responsible for the well-being and safety of the students, taking attendance, maintaining a functioning classroom, utilizing classroom management skills, leaving a clean classroom, and teaching the provided curriculum. Reports to the building administrator. EXAMPLES OF COMMON DUTIES:
- Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.
- Supervises classroom of absent teacher.
- Teaches provided lesson plans.
- Maintains a functioning classroom.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
- Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.
- Provides for the care and protection of school property and maintains a neat and orderly classroom (straightens chairs, tables, clears white boards, etc.).
- Indicates to students at beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with school protocols.
- Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.
- Reviews and understands emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
- Reviews and understands procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems.
- Reviews and understands school procedures and regulations.
- Respects the personality and individuality of the pupils under their direction and maintains confidentiality in compliance with FERPA.
- Develops and maintains cordial work relationships with all colleagues.
- Performs other specific duties as assigned by the building administrator, such as lunchroom, homeroom, outside areas, halls, clerical, club and social activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree preferred. High School diploma or equivalent required (a certification waiver from the State of Connecticut will be required and requested by the District).
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. (Must be 22 years of age to substitute teach at the high school level.)
- Experience working with school-aged children.
PAY: The daily rate for substitute teachers in the Berlin Public Schools is $125.00.Equal Opportunity Employer
