This former private island can only be accessed by boat and is a true hidden gem of the Lowcountry. For nearly 40 years, it was owned by billionaire conservationist Ted Turner, who purchased St. Phillips in 1979 to preserve its integrity as an unspoiled natural environment and protect it from development. In 2017, the State of South Carolina purchased the island, which is now operated in conjunction with nearby Hunting Island State Park.Job Purpose and Duties:Under general supervision, administers, operates and maintains a state park.1) Responsible for specific park operations of all facilities on St. Phillips Island. Performs administrative duties relative to budgeting of revenues and expenditures and required reporting responsibilities. Manages reservations, tours, and all outside organizations, businesses and stakeholders.2) Directs or performs maintenance on facilities, equipment, and property to standards of the agency. Assists in planning of maintenance projects. Works to provide a safe environment for park visitors and employees. Provides required reports. Employee will be required to live in designated park housing to provide for security, safety and emergency response.3) Performs duties relative to assisting the overall management of St. Phillips Island.4) Effectively hires, trains, and supervises full-time staff and directs the activities of seasonal employees. Educates and trains Hunting Island State Park staff on and about St. Phillips and its operations under supervision of the Park Manager. Effectively manages, recruits, and trains St. Phillips ranger guide team members.5) Responsible for/or assists with the maintaining of park inventory of equipment, supplies, facilities, and retail items. Provides required reports.6) Performs continuous public relation activities and educational and recreational activities as required. Assures that all activities i.e. interpretive programs, recreational programs, and tournaments conducted in accordance with established procedures or policies.7) Practice and promote teamwork within Hunting Island State Park, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year. To include, but not limited to: State Park Emergency Response Team and Ceremonial Corps.Minimum and Additional Requirements Bachelor's Degree in Park Administration or related field with three (3) years' experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity related to State Park operations or equivalent combination of education & experience. The ability to work independently and direct subordinates as required. Knowledge of park operations to include maintenance and administrative functions.Additional Requirements:1) Ability to communicate with others in a tactful and cordial manner. Working knowledge of park operations and administration. Ability to lead and direct subordinates. Working knowledge of various types of office equipment such as computers, calculators, etc. Skilled in the operation of various marine watercraft and ability to navigate coastal waters in a variety of weather conditions.2) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, bending, walking and standing on uneven terrain, crawling and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Ability to work flexible schedule, including, nights, weekends, and holidays. Position requires boat operation and residency in agency provided housing.3) Possess a valid SC drivers license. Must possess or acquire within 6 months of hire a USGS captain's license.
