Job Duties

VDOT's Kerrs Creek/Fancy Hill Area Headquarters (AHQ) in Rockbridge County is seeking a highly qualified Highway Maintenance Operator to join their team. As the qualified candidate you will:• Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. • Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. • Perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks to complete assigned work. • Use a variety of hand and power tools to completed assigned tasks• Install, maintain and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, lane closures, etc., in assigned areas using the MUTCD.

• Assist in tracking inventory and maintaining records• Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.• Perform maintenance repair, replacement and preventive maintenance. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.• Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. • Provide traffic control.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.• Safety shoes required.• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.• Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.• Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.• Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements at time of hire.

You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
