Job Summary and Qualifications

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for assisting ophthalmologists in delivering comprehensive eye care services by performing diagnostic tests, gathering patient histories, and supporting eye examinations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Duties:
    • Perform preliminary tests such as visual acuity, intraocular pressure, refractometry, and color vision testing.
    • Operate and maintain ophthalmic instruments, including slit lamps, keratometers, and autorefractors.
    • Assist in performing diagnostic imaging tests such as OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), fundus photography, and visual field testing.
  • Procedural Assistance:
    • Assist the ophthalmologist during eye exams, minor surgeries, and laser treatments.
    • Apply eye drops, anesthetics, or dilating drops as directed.
    • Conduct A-scans, B-scans, and pachymetry measurements as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent (Required)
    • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • At least 1-2 years of experience in an ophthalmic or medical office setting.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong understanding of ophthalmic terminology, tests, and procedures.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.
    • Proficiency in handling ophthalmic equipment and conducting preliminary tests.
    • Commitment to patient-centered care and attention to detail.
