Job Description:

The San Mateo Medical Center is seeking Orderly (Medical Services Assistant I) candidates to perform basic and routine duties related to patient and specimen transport and bedside care throughout the medical center. Duties may include the following: transporting patients and specimen; assisting nursing personnel in the care and lifting of patients; managing oxygen tanks, transporting medical records, medications, and other supplies and equipment to and from units; performing light housekeeping duties as assigned; lifting patients and heavy items such as supplies and equipment; assisting with patients requiring security; and responding to various emergency codes, such as a Code Blue.

The ideal candidate will possess experience transferring and transporting patients, specimens, and equipment; experience performing multiple duties at once; experience with infection control procedures in a medical setting; and is skilled in providing customer service.

Current vacancies include one regular, full-time, vacancy and three extra-help, part-time vacancies.

Salary Range

Medical Services Assistant I - Regular : $31.50/hour

Medical Services Assistant I - Extra Help : $24.70/hour - $30.86/hour

NOTE: The eligible list generated from this recruitment may be used to fill future extra-help, term, unclassified, and regular classified vacancies.Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Transport patients.

* Assist nursing personnel in the care and lifting of patients.

* Set up oxygen, traction and other hospital equipment.

* Transport specimens, medical records and other supplies and equipment.

* Perform light housekeeping duties as assigned.

* Assist patients with meals, bathing, showering and grooming.

* Assist with patients requiring security.

* Perform light filing, mail distribution and clerical duties.

* Lift patients and heavy items such as supplies and equipment.

* Perform related duties as assigned.

Licensure/Certification: The current vacancies require a current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association or a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Red Cross.

Knowledge of: Basic principles, techniques, and procedures in delivering patient care related to personal hygiene, comfort, treatment, physical and psychosocial needs.

Skill/Ability to:

* Learn hospital and clinic techniques and procedures.

* Follow oral and written instructions.

* Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

* Performing routine tasks.

* Develop empathetic attitudes toward patients.

* Lift and transport patients and heavy items such as supplies and equipment.

* Work with culturally, socio-economically, diverse patient population of varying ages.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
