Responsibilities of Orientation and Mobility Instructor:The Orientation and Mobility Instructor will manage an assigned caseload to deliver O&M instruction to consumers who are preparing for employment or attending school. The instructor will also assist in the development of lesson plans and training plans, assessing consumers training needs.
  • Work one on one to evaluate consumer needs through assessment and direct observation to establish an Orientation and Mobility teaching plan and provide all phases of Orientation and Mobility training tailored to the unique needs of each individual consumer.
  • Observe and interpret capabilities of each consumer for purpose of completing his/her orientation and mobility teaching plan, providing appropriate instruction using adaptive techniques and/or equipment to address and achieve goals of this plan.
  • Orient consumers to job sites, areas within their homes and communities and special routes
  • Schedule lessons and coordinate programs in a timely manner in order to meet agency demands and in line with Vocational Goal on Individualized Plan for Employment.
  • Maintain timely correspondence with consumers and submit accurate and complete notes on each consumer as required by agency administration in the AWARE system.
  • Travel as needed off site to consumers' work sites, homes or educational facilities to provide training and evaluations.
Minimum and Additional Requirements A bachelor's degree in a related field and experience in career counseling or related case management. Orientation and Mobility Certification required.Additional Requirements:Must have above average knowledge of state and Federal Vocational Rehabilitation laws and regulations. Must have excellent verbal and written communication. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with consumer, and community partners. Knowledge of objectives and values derived from instruction in rehabilitation.Employee must possess good organizational skills and must be able to work with minimal amount of supervision. This person must be able to work as part of a team. A great deal of judgement is required in order to adequately assess the skill levels and needs of each consumer served.Work involves travel 2-4 days per week and occasional overnight travel. May require evenings and weekend shifts. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs. Constantly positions self to provide orientation and mobility instruction to consumers. Frequently moves orientation and mobility equipment across campus for various training needs. Occasionally works outdoors.
