Orientation & Mobility TeacherReports To: Director of Exceptional Children's ProgramTerms of Employment: Full-Time 10 MonthsSalary: NC State Salary ScheduleFLSA Exempt/Non-Exempt: ExemptQualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or above in Teaching Area with or eligible to receive a license level of one of the following: A, M, S, D. Must be Highly Qualified for EC, Elementary, or Core Area.
  • Experience in teaching orientation and mobility (O&M) for visually impaired students to reach their goals of independence, education, or employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:The Orientation & Mobility Teacher (O&M) teacher directly addresses how students will become independent with travel at school, in the home, and in the community helping individuals navigate their environment and find gainful employment improving their quality of life. Specific teaching assignments will be individualized, and change based on the needs of each student.
  • Guide Techniques, Indoor Techniques, Cane Techniques
  • Orientation Concepts: Route Travel, Block Travel, Street Crossing, Transportation
  • Travel Techniques with Low Vision
  • Technology for Travel
  • Overview of current navigation apps
  • Ability to teach students how to travel independently at home and in the community
  • Differentiate instructional strategies and content to effectively teach individuals who have lost vision from a wide variety of backgrounds and with various learning styles and readiness levels
  • Complete assessments and develop lesson plans through lectures, tactile, auditory, visual demonstrations, field trips, and virtual learning experiences for students enrolled in the orientation and mobility class
  • Compose verbal and timely written reports with creating and/or administering effective assessments, and goal setting of student's progress in the case management system
  • Stay abreast of current trends, new products, and new mobility APPs for individuals who are Visually Impaired
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and staff to assist students with achieving their academic or functional goals
  • The O&M teacher will be responsible for participating on the staff team which includes assisting during mealtimes, attending planning, progress meetings, and attending in-service trainings
  • Needs to have the means to travel as the job requires
Physical and Cognitive Requirements:The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Orientation & Mobility Teacher job classification within the Exceptional Children's Program of Hoke County Schools. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.Must be able to:
  • Prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job related forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation and correspondence in all languages required by the job
  • Understand and conform to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style
  • Speak to individuals or groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence
  • Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints
  • Write using standard convention in all languages required by the job
  • Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently, both orally and in writing
  • Use/interpret job related terminology, mathematical formulas and functions effectively and efficiently
  • Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  • Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations

  • Operate a motor vehicle
  • Operate/use a variety of automated office machines and other job specific office equipment
