Children's Home of Kingston Job Title: ORR Bilingual TeacherFLSA Status: Exempt Reports to: Program Director Position Summary:The Unaccompanied Alien Children Program referred by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), provides temporary residential care and other supportive services to Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) who are under legal custody of the Federal Government. In the basic shelter program, we provide therapeutic and educational services and other supports that youth need to achieve success through an array of strength-based and targeted interventions as well as link them with family members and/or other sponsors in the United States, so they are able to move forward with their lives and thrive. Teachers work to support unaccompanied children with progressive academic services, including Social Emotional Learning, acculturation, recreation, and the development of independent living skills. Teachers guide children in our program to become global citizens and agents of positive change in their communities.Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provides educational services and assessments, including curriculum building meeting Flores standards for education requirements
- Work a 12-month school calendar in the cottages for all New Horizons Youth
- Develop lesson plans
- Collaborate with other New Horizons Staff in the development of treatment plans for all youth in the program
- Present learning in education programs at various academic skill levels (including English as a second language class)
- Monitor youths' participation to ensure adequate instruction and assistance to each individual
- Utilize chrome books and other equipment to support education for the students, with possible distance learning and other educational courses
- Provide individualized academic instruction to assigned class based on age group, developmental level, and observed needs
- Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English in the Core Curriculum Content Standards and English Language Proficiency Standards (IELPS). Instruction must be consistent and coordinated so that students meet and exceed learning targets and the requirements outlined in the state and federal law.
- Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student's ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow English learners to meaningfully access the instructional program.
- Administers academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student's level and/or progress in meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition.
- Maintains complete and accurate records.
- Provides a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies.
- Functions as a team member, by communicating effectively and consistently with ORR/UAC Program Director, Case Manager and liaisons regarding the treatment progress of an individual youth.
- Participates in treatment conferences and treatment team meetings and completes associated paperwork in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates working knowledge of normative child and adolescent development and competence in dealing with children and families from diverse cultures and ethnicities
- Participates in ongoing professional education
- All other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to speak, read, and writes English & Spanish fluently, which allows full communication with agency staff and third parties.
- Possess a valid NYS Driver's License
- Ability to use sound judgment while following agency policies, practices and procedures
- Ability to handle confidential material in a responsible manner
- Ability to work well in a team setting with people from many cultures and backgrounds
- Must have positive attitude towards youth
- Ability to adjust to change as the program continues to develop an understanding of, and the ability to work with, persons from diverse cultures
- Ability to stay organized and multitask
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree; certification by the relevant governing authority
- NYS Teaching Certificate is ESL or Special Education or; other appropriate accrediting body and additional training to meet the special needs of accompanied children
- Knowledge in Academic Testing/ Evaluations
- An understanding of, and ability to work with, persons with diverse needs and from diverse cultures is a must

- Varicella: two doses of varicella vaccine (at least four weeks apart) OR born in the United States before 1980 with a reported history of chickenpox (verified by an adult present at the time of illness) OR titers indicating varicella immunity OR documentation from a healthcare provider verifying previous infection.
- MMR: two doses of MMR vaccine (at least four weeks apart) OR titers indicating immunity to all three diseases.
- Tdap: one Tdap dose.
- Influenza: one dose annually during flu season. Per the CDC, flu season is from October through May.
