POSITION: OUTPATIENT CODER DEPARTMENT: HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENTFLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPTJOB SUMMARY: Under supervision of the Health Information Management Director, the Outpatient Coder codes all outpatient records including, but not limited to, outpatient laboratory, x-ray, emergency room records, rural health records and abstracts all outpatient coding material into the mainframe system.   • Codes all outpatient records using ICD-9-Cm and CPT coding books.
  • Assembles all outpatient records and analyzes said records for completeness of documentation. Abstracts ER charges.
  • Collects Emergency Room Records each morning and checks them against the ER Log Book to make sure all records are present.
  • Audits each ER record for correctness of physician change, as well as verification of charges and procedures listed.
  • Checks for missing drugs for pharmacy.
  • Flags and directs ER record to appropriate person for completion.
  • Matches signed x-ray and EKG with ER record.
  • View chart for any x-ray or EKG discrepancy and report accordingly.
  • Copies chart for Medicaid Community Care Referrals.
  • Complies with Regulatory Statutes and Rules and Regulations of the Medicare Program.
  • Adheres to all Coding Rules utilizing The Coding Clinic by AHA and CPT Assistant by AMA for reference.
  • Abstracts all outpatient record information into the mainframe system.
  • Runs the Prior Day's Discharges and Admits. Distributes to departments to include Medical Records, Social Services, Utilization Review, Case Management, Infection Control, Coding.
  • Admits and Discharges IOP patients, distributes to appropriate departments.
  • Refers any question to the Coding Supervisor.
  • Assists with programs initiated by Louisiana Health Care Review (PRO), relative to coding and Payment Error Prevention.
  • Maintains complete confidentiality concerning care and patients records at all times.
  • Attends coding Education Seminars, as directed by Director.
  • Performs other clerical job functions as necessary and/or requested by supervisor.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Training: High school graduate or equivalent. Work Experience: Medical related knowledge/experience preferredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Ability to work with physicians in a collaborative manner. Must have good office procedure skills with qualities of diplomacy and tact to maintain working relationships and contacts. Must have ability to relate to people on a daily basis by furnishing or obtaining information. Must be organized and efficient in completing tasks and duties with minimum supervision and have a degree of responsibility in assuring that regulations and standards of coding are met.Physical Requirements:
    • Remain in a stationary position for long periods of time
    • Frequently move around campus to various departments
    • Constantly position self to prepare material for shredding and maintain files in file cabinets
    • Constantly operates the shredding machine, a computer, scanner, printers, and other office machinery.
    • Ability to communicate information accurately so others will understand.
    • Ability to observe details at close range.
