Job Description:

The Outside Machinist position is responsible for the installation of propulsion machinery, sea valves, steering gear, anchor handling equipment, elevators, pumps, ventilation fans, cooling coils, refrigeration units, compressors, weapons systems, remote operators, radars, and antennas. In the process of installing this equipment, experience is gained in the use of math, blueprints, precision tooling, and portable machine tools. Outside machinists also become familiar with the procedures for precision line boring, precision alignment of machinery, bearing fitting, machinery assembly, surface machining, precision reaming, and machinery and weapons testing. This position reports directly to Superintendents, Program Managers and Regional Manager.

  • Overhaul, maintenance, testing of pumps, valves, turbines, condensers, shafts, rudders, winches.
  • Set up and operate portable machining tools and equipment.
  • Ability to apply basic machine shop math.
  • Lays out passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces for connections, for example shafting and steam lines.
  • Tests and inspects installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.

  • Installs below-deck auxiliaries, for example evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers and connects them to steampipe systems.
  • Responsible for the application and care of all standard shop measuring and hand tools.
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities.
  • Proficient at setup and operation of drill presses.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property.
  • Assists in determining repairs and required to bring equipment to rebuilt status.
  • Install and repair foundations for operating machinery and principal structures/components of ship's armament.
  • Demonstrates layout proficiency.
  • Work Environment

    This job operates inside and aboard ships both offshore and onshore as well as confined spaces. While performing some duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. Must wear hearing, eye, head protection and proper PPE when required. Visits may require standing on a variety of surfaces and at differing angles, bending over, crouching, and climbing up and over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge and boat structural members.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

    Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work vary depending on schedule and job contract. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

    Required Education and Experience

  • Able to dissemble, repair, and install various types of equipment and machinery such as pumps, valves, winches, and gear boxes.
  • Install and repair foundations for operating machinery and principal structures/components of ship's armament.
  • Candidate must possess 3-5 or more years of experience as a marine outside machinist.
  • Installs below-deck auxiliaries, for example evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers and connects them to steampipe systems.
  • Dry dock experience on shafts, rudders, stabilizers, and propellers is preferred.
  • Tests and inspects installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
  • Capable of reading and interpreting blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces and observe ships working protocol.
  • Lays out passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces for connections, for example shafting and steam lines.
  • Ability to lift to 50lbs consistently.
  • Experience with Diesel Engines is a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of how to repair motors, shafts, pumps, and valves.
  • 3+ years of experience working as an Outside Machinist, Industrial Mechanic, Machinist Mate, or Enginemen.
  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC and D-Bids badges via a background check.
