Human by nature.As our next Packaging Engineer, reporting to our Head of Manufacturing Excellence for Liquids & Powders, you will be in charge of managing the technical aspects of the packaging portfolio across Taste & Wellbeing North America. You will improve the optimization of primary and secondary packaging materials with the team of packaging engineers according to the sales, sustainability and cost goals set by the business. You will support Project Engineering to specify, select, and commission packing equipment. You will advise the development of supply strategy and supplier relationships with the IM&S Regional Category Manager, and you will be a catalyst in transforming packaging activities to ever higher levels of sustainability, quality, and productivityThis position is located in Chicago, IL, but is open to Cincinnati, OH and East Hanover, NJIn this exciting role, you will be responsible for:Partner Management and Networking
  • Be the primary contact for the region/division on packaging activities and act as subject matter expert.
  • Develop and rely on site-based packaging champions to leave a legacy of packaging excellence in the organization.
  • Coordinate packaging validation activities and confirm packaging qualification documents with project teams.
  • Improve packaging trials following the validation plan and provide inputs for packaging / manufacturing costs and Capex plans.
  • Network with the team of Packaging Engineers, Process Engineering, Procurement, EH&S, Quality and Supply chain teams.
  • Support regional teams for the evaluation and selection of packaging vendors and periodically conduct vendor reviews.
  • Lead packaging projects for the region/division and implement packaging processes, best practices and guidelines as agreed with the Global Packaging Team.
Safety and Quality Management
  • Address and report regulatory exposures (Dangerous Goods, Food Contact Materials, etc.) and ensure all packaging material meet safety and quality standards in consideration of legal, country requirements and business demands.
  • Support Operations and Quality teams on issues related to packaging materials and/or packing equipment to determine best-fit resolutions and dedicated customer issue management for packaging.
  • Solve Packaging and labeling issues.
  • Ensure the quality and accuracy of the technical data linked to the packaging materials in the system and that the pertaining documents are stored in the Global Packaging Repository.
Continuous improvement
  • Inspire and support the business in developing innovative packaging solutions for our product categories.
  • Help develop and implement packaging strategy.
  • Identify, lead, and implement regional packaging optimization projects.
  • Partner with IM&S/suppliers to support innovation, cost savings, compliance and business continuity.
Automation
  • Coordinate assessment and identification of packing automation.
  • Improve OEE and reduce non-value-added labor in the packing and shipment preparation processes.
  • Implement packaging recipes, including logic and code implementation.
  • Document, share, and standardize transferrable automation solutions across sites in the network.
Required Qualifications:
  • Education in Packaging, Industrial, or related Engineering, with industrial packaging experience.
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks for packaging and transport of food and chemicals
  • Network of associations, regulatory bodies and industry partners relevant to packaging
  • SAP exposure
  • Rockwell and Siemens IT/OT solution experience
  • Customer focus
