We currently use a number of different protective packaging methods based upon the product size and fragility to prevent product damage during shipment. These include:Polyurethane spray foamPolyurethane foam bagsInflatable bubble wrapCardboard box partitionsThese methods are versatile and effective; however, we seek to explore and transition to packaging alternatives that are recyclable and biodegradable thereby reducing the environmental impact to our customers of waste packaging.We are seeking a Packaging Engineering student to support this project.Project parametersScope: Product packaging used in our manufacturing facility in Rochester, NY.Actions required:Data compilation of products currently used for each packaging solution and costs incurredEstablish criteria to determine acceptability of packaging to be usedConduct packaging assessment of current packaging and characterize potential alternativesBenchmark with other companies that have transitioned to sustainable packagingWork with Suppliers on candidate packagingAssessment and testing of protection level of alternative packagingCharacterize pros and cons of sustainable packaging alternativesImplement beta test of proposed solution(s)Develop a business case for transitioning to potential alternative(s)Skills required of student:Currently pursing a degree in Packaging Science/Packaging EngineeringOrganizational skills in managing a project in a manufacturing settingCollect and stratify moderate amounts of dataKnowledge and application of packaging standards and test methodsGood communication skills and able interface with shop floor personnel, engineers, and external suppliersAble to establish a business case for any change in material, equipment, or process.Estimated duration of project:Estimate 3 months of full-time work.
