JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Director of Municipal Maintenance. Must be able to perform unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, operate equipment used in construction, operation, repair, and maintain city parks and buildings, ensuring they are safe for public use.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Operate all equipment used to perform duties of this position.
* General maintenance of parks and city buildings.
* Keeping playground equipment in safe working order.
* Communicate effectively, courteously, and clearly in English with the public and other city employees by telephone and in person.
* Operate power tools.
* Read tapes.
* Read blue prints.
* Work with hands overhead for long periods of time.
* Stand for long periods of time.
* Work in confined spaces.
* Climb extension ladders and stepladders.
* Must have adequate visual acuity and color perception.
* Replace damaged ceiling tile, floor tile, and wall covering.
* Build cabinets and other wooden equipment in workshop.
* Install items such as window shades, blinds, and curtain rods, wall fans, and door locks.
* Repair surface defects of wood products such as sashes, doors, furniture, cabinetwork, mirror frames, and picture frames to prepare them for finishing, gilding and painting.
* Clean and prepare surface for painting; applying thin, even coat of finish material, such as paint.
* Install and repair locks.
* Install doors and window counters.
* Repair chain link and/or wooden fence.
* Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
* Motorized vehicles, trencher, power and hand tools and equipment for carpentry and general construction work, such as saws, drills, sanders and hammers; copy machine, phone; mobile or portable radio.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE:
* Valid Driver's License.
* High School Diploma or GED,
* Two (2) years' experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair or
* Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
* Extensive knowledge of carpentry.
* Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal construction, maintenance and repair activities.
* Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities;
* Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
* Ability to work safely;
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public;
* Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
