Essential Functions The Painter applies paint and other coating materials to various surfaces from ground level and/or scaffolds, platforms, and ladders at various heights, interior and exterior, by using brushes, rollers, and spray guns following acceptable methods and tools to prepare various surfaces for painting. The Painter cares for, maintains, and cleans standard painting tools. This position operates at the Journeyman level for the craft. During winter season, the Painter assists in snow removal. The Painter assists other divisions as necessary. This position reports to the Carpentry Foreperson.
- Prepares surfaces utilizing various methods using sandpaper, wire brushes, or steel wool and removes loose and old paint from surfaces using paint remover, scrapes, or wire brushes so that the coating material will properly cover and adhere to the surface.
- Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, spackle, or other fillers to make a suitable surface for the coating material.
- Thins, stirs, and mixes paint according to specific directions to obtain proper consistency.
- Uses premixed paints or may prepare paints to match specific colors by mixing required portions of tints and colorants to obtain colors, hues, and shades.
- Applies various coating materials such as varnish, stain, shellac, lacquer, or enamel using brushes and/or other related tools, methods, and techniques to refinish cabinets, desks, chairs, or doors, or to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trim, and fixtures of buildings and other structures.
- Paints various surfaces including cramped and hard to reach places from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms at various heights.
- Erects various types of scaffolding such as prefabricated metal or aluminum, wooden and/or swing states, A ladders, window jacks, or ladder jacks.
- Cleans and maintains various kinds of brushes, rollers, and other equipment using water, turpentine, paint thinner, or other cleaning materials to ensure that tools are kept in good condition.
- Shovels snow and/or operates equipment used in snow removal.
- May be assigned work of other crafts as needed or in emergent situations.
Essential Qualifications
- This position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of an apprentice painting program or experience in general painting work involving job content comparable to such an apprentice program (i.e. surface preparation, paint application, clean up, and scaffold rigging).
- Ability to operate hand and power tools safely and take safety precautions in performing the work.
- A valid New Jersey Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Wallpapering, hanging sheetrock, and furniture refinishing skills.
- Class B CDL
