Job Description:
The Superintendent - Paper Machine is the leading member of the Paper Department's management team that is responsible for providing overall leadership, operational strategies, and ensuring excellent safety performance. This role ensures the safe and efficient operations of all activities in the Paper Department as part of an integrated mill. Duties & Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following):Utilize and refine standard work systems to effect sustainable positive results in safety, environmental, people, quality, cost, and performanceDemonstrate safety as a core value by creating a safe work environmentLead safety systems and processes that support achieving our continually improving annual goalsEnsure efficient operation of paper machine and/or extruder machineDevelop and implement quality strategies ensuring compliance with customer specificationsDevelop leadership reports through mentorship and proven leadership and accountability methodsCollaborates with all levels of management personnel to establish production and quality control standards, develop budgets and cost controls to help ensure long term sustainabilityManage all area production activities and establish area production priorities for products in keeping with effective operations and cost factorsDevelop area budgets and manage costs within established budget and take ownership for financial performance of areaImplement and manage improvement strategies designed to: include all other production areas, increase customer satisfaction, increase yield and operating efficiency, reduce cost, and improve reliability.Enforce strict safety standards and practices. Be aware of existing safety hazards and make every feasible attempt to correct these hazardsCollaborate with Mill Leadership, Maintenance, Quality, Shipping and area leadership assuring alignment with meeting quality standards and operational efficienciesDetermine capital needs of area and develop and oversee area capital improvement projectsProvide input on capital projects and strategic improvement plans for all other Mill areasEnsure communication of business strategy, goals, and initiatives to mill and area leadershipManages continuous improvement projects for area of responsibilityCoordinates with maintenance to prioritize maintenance and outage needsCoordinates predictive and preventative maintenance activities establishing long-term sustainability for equipmentDevelop and execute strategic plans to increase overall area efficiencyReviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance, and operational reports to determine causes of nonconformity with product specifications, and operating or production problemsDevelops strategy to ensure operational efficiencies, standard operating methods and procedures designed to eliminate throughput issues and improve product qualityMaintain effective communications and working relationships with Operations Departments, Suppliers, Maintenance, Safety, IT, Environmental, Human Resources, Engineering, and PurchasingOther duties as assignedQualificationsQualificationsBachelor's Degree in Engineering, Paper Science or related field with five years of operations experience within the paper industry including four (4) years of progressive leadership roles or five (5) plus years of progressive and practical paper making experience including three (3) year Strong interpersonal and leadership skillsProven strong strategic planning and analytical skillsDemonstrated troubleshooting skills of the paper making processDemonstrated ability to develop strategic priorities to meet short and long-term objectivesProven ability to lead by example and mentor leadership staffDemonstrated ability to drive change leading to improved performance over timeStrong organizational skills with the proven ability develop and implement changes necessitated by internal and external business conditionsSolid oral and written communication skillsComprehensive knowledge of the operation of an integrated millProficient at managing all levels of an operating area and interfacing with all levels of an organizationPossess an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, with a situational (servant, directive, collaborative) leadership approach to managing the teamMust be able to pass a background check, drug screening and reference checkLegally authorized to work in the USAProven experience with reliability and continuous improvement principles and techniquesDesired CharacteristicsExperience within a unionized environmentKnowledge Lean Manufacturing or Six SigmaKepner Tregoe or other problem analysis toolsWhy is This a Great OpportunityGreat benefits and relocation benefits.
