The Paralegal is a member of the Settlement Services Team. You will support a team of attorneys to assist in crafting and monitoring policies & procedures that mitigate risk to the company; ensuring that all operations align with established best practices as well as all applicable laws, regulations and corporate standards; and the review and analysis of title to real property. Day to day responsibilities include assisting attorneys in all title and underwriting, regulatory compliance functions, and implementation and enforcement of American Land Title Association (ALTA) best practices, policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
Title & Underwriting
- Assist in the review and analysis of title related questions.
- Interact with title insurance underwriters on title insurability and marketability issues.
- Research, analysis, resolution of title insurance claims.
- Work with internal stakeholders to mitigate risk and ensure clear and marketable title in connection with acquisition of real estate.
- Help to monitor changes to title insurance underwriter requirements/standards and communicate such changes to all affected employees and departments.
Regulatory Compliance
- Support Underwriting & Regulatory Compliance, ensuring that Full-Service Operations and Partner Operations are in compliance with all applicable: (a) Federal regulations; (b) State regulations; and (c) Corporate Standards.
- Track and maintain all required certificates of insurance, operating licenses, and bonds for all Full-Service Operations and Partner Operations.
- Assist with Internal and External Audits.
- Monitor changes and updates to best practice policies & standards in the industry and communicate such changes.
- Prepare and maintain reports: (a) necessary for compliance with ALTA Best Practices and all underwriting, legal and regulatory requirements; and (b) as directed by the requirements of directed by Underwriting & Regulatory Compliance.
Operations
- Assist in the development, documentation, and implementation of Community Disclosures with outside local counsel and Homebuilder Divisions.
- Participate in the bi-annual review of Purchase Agreements and other required documents for Homebuilder Divisions.
- Coordinate subpoena responses as needed.
Qualifications:
- 2 - 5 years professional work experience
- Prior contract, real estate and title industry experience preferred
- Bachelor's degree or paralegal certification preferred
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
- Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
