It does not identify all tasks that may be expected, nor address the performance standards that must be maintained.General Position Summary:Responsible for patient care, patient safety, emotional support to patients and families, maintenance of a safe environment, stocking of unit supplies, communication with staff and patients, and accurate documentation. Also responsible for advanced patient care skills.Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:•Provides basic patient care, including vital signs, hygiene (bathing and oral care), positioning, toileting, linen changes, ambulation, range of motion, nutritional and hydration support, collecting lab specimens, placement of telemetry leads, and set-up traction.•Point of Care testing: take patient specimens from patients into a room designated for POC tests and run urine pregnancy, urinalysis, strep test(swabbing the patients throat), I-stat troponin blood test.•Phlebotomy-blood draws on patients•Perform Electrocardiogram-EKG•Inventory-Daily ordering of supplies and stocking the supplies in the supply rooms, as well as restocking room carts and cabinets after each patient is discharged.•Cleaning beds, cleaning and making sure all monitors are working and suction on walls work as well•Collect specimens for Flu/RSV by nasal suction•Perform throat swabs for strep testing on patients•Perform splinting extremities: preparing and applying fiberglass/plaster splints in various types on patients•Ortho equipment: Knee immobilizers-strait and hinged, Ortho boots, post op shoes, crutches, walkers, Velcro wrist splints, Ankle braces, slings, C-collar. Adjust and apply to patient while teaching patient how to use equipment properly.•Set up SVN machine and show patient how to use properly•Assist with conscious sedations by preparing and applying splints, assist patient with BVM if patient needs assistance in breathing. Set up equipment that is required for a sedation.•Perform wound irrigation, simple and complicated dressings on patients•Set up suture trays for providers•Suture and staple removal on patients•Set up patient and supplies, assist with pelvic exams(female techs assist only)•Insertion and discontinuation of foley catheters as well as strait caths on patients•Perform Mayo enema's on patients•Perform Eye/Ear Lavage on patients•Perform visual acuity on patients•Set up and assist providers with Lumbar punctures/Central lines/Chest tubes•Set up and assist nurses with gastric lavage•Setup and apply Gaymar/bare hugger on patients•Respond to rapid response on ancillary departments to assist with CPR,Etc.•Retrieve patients with wheel chair or gurney from outside facility that are unable to walk into the ER from vehicle.•Transport OB patients to OB floors•Place patients on backboards and perform full C-spine precautions: C-collar, secure patient with straps or duck-tape to board, head blocks.•Set up Decontamination- donning and doffing for Hazmat situations•Any trauma/code in ER techs are required to be at bedside•Provides advanced non-licensed patient care skills, discontinuation of IV's, check for placement of and discontinuation of nasogastric tubes, hang tube feedings and ostomy car.•Ensures maintenance of safe patient environment: clutter-free, bed alarms, armband checks, ID band, fall risk, and allergy bands.•Ensures compliance with HIPAA policies and procedures.•Stocks suppliers per departmental needs.•Assists the Health Unit Coordinator with duties as needed.•Maintains departmental paperwork (charge sheets on patient clipboards).•Assists the nurse in admitting and discharging patients from the unit.•Educates patients and families regarding room orientation, patient activities, and hospital policies.•Documents accurately, including vital signs, intake and output, safety checks, and patient activities.•Communicates pertinent information to the registered nurse.•Participates in educational offerings, including in-services, competency activities, etc.•Participates in departmental/hospitalwide informational meetings, including staff meetings, hospitalwide forums, and seminars.•Displays proper etiquette and mannerisms that reflect the Service Standard Behavior Guidelines.•Promotes the Patient Safety Standards as a core value of the organization. This position also requires knowledge of hospital equipment and programs, including all Hospital Information Systems and department specific equipment. This position also requires basic computer, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.Education and/or Experience:•High School diploma or equivalent (required).•Paramedic Certification (required)•CPR Certification (required within 30 days of hire date)•ACLS/PALS (Required within 6 months of hire date)•ITLS or PHTLS (preferred)•One year experience in a clinical setting (preferred).Physical Demands & Job Conditions:Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. The worker is subject to contact with chemicals, contact with infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, and encounters with upset/disturbed individuals.
