Job Summary Under the direction of the Coordinator-Child Development Program, assist a teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom, child care center or before/after school program; assist with planning and implementing a variety of activities to meet the needs and interests of the children; assist in the preparation of instructional materials and provide routine clerical support. Job Description / Essential Elements: SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: PARAPROFESSIONAL I -CHILD CAREBASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide quality child care and a safe and loving environment for children in a child care center or program; assist with planning and implementing a variety of activities to meet the needs and interests of the children; assist in the preparation of instructional materials and provide routine clerical support. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Provide quality child care and a safe and loving environment for the children in an assigned child care center or program; provide assistance in areas of toddler hygiene, nutrition and child care. Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparation of instructional materials, typing and duplicating materials, taking role and maintaining records and files; collect and account for monies received. Assist in monitoring rest and nap periods; clean children, clothes and linens as necessary; assist children in toileting as appropriate; respond to a child's needs and problems in a patient, caring and sensitive manner. Assist students to learn normal oral speech patterns by helping them produce sounds, words and sentences; read age-appropriate stories to students. Participate in activities for toddlers; assure that children are interacting in age-appropriate activities; escort children outside for various activities; oversee groups of students in games and play activities; assure safe outdoor play; report progress regarding student performance and behavior Assist students regarding the building of self-esteem; assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance. Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a copier, paper cutter and laminator. Maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; clean, set up, and set out toys, instructional materials and snacks. Accompany students on field trips, to bus stops, restrooms, offices and other locations as needed. OTHER DUTIES: Attend and participate in parent conferences and a variety of meetings as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Basic principles and practices of early child development including proper care and discipline. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities. Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Basic instructional methods and techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Operation of standard office and classroom equipment. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic record-keeping and filing techniques. ABILITY TO: Providing quality child care and a safe environment for children in an assigned child care center or program. Learn, apply and explain rules, regulations and procedures of the program. Provide a proper role model for program children. Participate in activities with assigned group of children. Provide patient and sensitive care to infants and toddlers. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Organize instructional materials. Operate a variety of standard office and classroom equipment. Observe health and safety regulations. Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities. Maintain routine records and files. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: NCLB compliance requires that paraprofessionals meet the following criteria: 1. A high school diploma or the equivalent; and 2. Two years of college (48 units); or 3. An A.A. degree (or higher), or 4. Pass a local assessment of knowledge or skills that demonstrates the equivalent of the above requirements. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Classroom and playground environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Dexterity of hands and fingers to hold children and manipulate objects used in play activities. Bending at the waist, kneeling, crawling or crouching to assist children. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Lifting and carrying moderately heavy children and objects. Requirements / Qualifications A local assessment of knowledge or skills that demonstrate the equivalent to the required job description or an AA degree or higher or have achieved 48 college units (general ed coursework). If you have an AA degree or higher or have achieved 48 college units (general ed coursework), you are required to attach transcripts to this application.
