City of Alton, IllinoisJob DescriptionPark Maintenance II & IIIJOB SUMMARYUnder general supervision of the Park & Recreation Director and the Park Maintenance Supervisor, perform work in the maintenance of grounds (including turf and ornamentals), buildings, facilities, and plant materials of Park & Recreation areas. Assist in maintaining irrigation for all City parks, athletic fields, and green spaces.JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform labor required in the maintenance of athletic facilities and landscaped areas.
- Regularly perform field inspections of park and recreation areas for hazardous conditions and ensure timely reporting of needs and progress to the immediate supervisor.
- Assist in planting, watering, fertilizing, and pruning of a variety of plants, trees, and shrubs in park areas. Maintain flower beds and planters, ensuring they are properly cultivated, weeded, and cared for.
- Set up and dismantle equipment for special events and functions held within the Parks.
- Operate light and heavy power-driven equipment, including tractors, riding lawnmowers, chippers, snowplows, trucks or any other piece of equipment assigned by supervisor.
- Cooperate with other park maintenance team members and communicate effectively with the supervisor, addressing any concerns or issues promptly. Assist and support other departments as required.
- Work safely and follow all safety protocols and procedures.
- Provide excellent customer service to park visitors and respond to complaints in a timely and professional manner.
- Work evenings and weekends as needed to perform related work as required.
- Assist in snow removal and ice control during winter months.
- Oversee seasonal personnel.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Direct supervision is provided by the Park Maintenance Supervisor.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years of age and a high school graduate or have a GED.
- Must possess basic reading, writing, and math skills as tested by the Civil Service Commission.
- Acceptable police record.
- Good physical conditions as proven in an examination by a physician selected by the Civil Service Commission, with the ability to work under adverse weather conditions, withstand extremes of hot and cold weather, and do heavy manual labor.
- Must have a valid Illinois Driver's License, Class B , CDL with Air Brake endorsement or the ability to obtain one within the probation period.
- Must be able to obtain an Illinois Pesticide Operators License before the end of the probation period.
- Subject to emergency call out twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
- Two (2) years of experience working athletic field maintenance, landscaping, or related positions.
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form. Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training.
- Ability to work independently.
- Proven ability to operate all equipment normally used in park and recreation maintenance.
- Ability to work with others and be courteous to the public.
