PARK RANGERPAY PLAN: 115 - $ 41,540.00 minimum salarySECTION I-JOB DESCRIPTIONThis is a responsible non-supervisory position. Employee is responsible to the Chief Park Ranger and must follow the chain of command and all departmental and managerial directives. Duties are to protect life and property. This is a law enforcement position with a special focuses on Cameron County Parks System properties and to serve the needs of those using the Cameron County Parks System facilities. Keeps the peace, maintains order and enforces general and special laws and Commissioners Court orders pertaining to Cameron County Parks and public access thereto.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (State the fundamental duties and tasks)
  • To protect Life and Property
  • To provide patrol, security and law enforcement services in County Parks and on County Public Beaches and access points to enhance public safety and protection of public and private property and County natural resources.
  • To Enforce Federal and State Laws
  • Work shifts and holidays.
  • Operate an emergency vehicle.
  • Work during emergency crisis (hurricanes, floods, riots, etc.)
  • Patrol County Parks and on County Public Beaches and access points.
  • Assist with crime prevention.
  • Protect crime scene.
  • Investigate motor vehicle accidents.
  • May be assigned to other related duties
  • Testify in court as required by law
  • Arranges for removal, transportation and storage of confiscated property.
  • Arrest and incarcerates violators of the law.
  • Detains and transports prisoners as ordered by the Chief Park Ranger.
  • SECTION II- JOB REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (State the minimum requirements for formal education and job related experience.)High School Diploma or its equivalent.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (As utilized in the performance of the Essential Functions of the job.)Acceptable working knowledge of Texas Penal Code, Traffic Code, and Family Law. Acceptable grammar skills and able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing in English language. Ability to work independently, analyze problems and develop solutions. Acceptable personal computer, typewriter, and basic office equipment operation skills. Ability to adjust to rapidly fluctuating situations, and multiple simultaneous projects. Working knowledge of laws pertaining to civil procedures. Skilled in the use of firearms and security devices. Knowledgeable in the law and policies pertaining to peace officer's use of force and physical restraints.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Special licenses and other requirements necessary to obtain or retain the position.)Must have a basic Peace Officer Certification from Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Office Standards and Education. Must have a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License and an acceptable driving record. Must have a Birth Certificate and a Social Security Number. Driver's license.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Working rotating shifts. Subject to handling, sitting, walking, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential job functions. Chasing and arresting violent subject(s). Physical requirements include lifting/carrying an average size person to either be placed in a patrol unit or for safety. The ability to control emotions when confronted with disturbing crime scenes and or any situation that requires police attention. Working conditions are primarily in an outdoor environment.SECTION III-JOB DIMENSIONSCONTACTS:Utilizes tact when dealing with Elected/Appointed Officials, Division/Department Heads, County employees, law-enforcement agencies, and the public regarding departmental operational issues. Demonstrates respect when in contact with law-enforcement agencies, community leaders, and or community groups.EXTERNAL CONTACTS:Constant contact with the public, law-enforcement agencies and emergency personnel. Communication is primarily by telephone, radio and in person. External report writing may be required on occasion.INTERNAL CONTACTS:Constant contact with Chief Park Ranger, Assistant Chief Park Ranger, Parks Director, Elected/Appointed Officials, Division/Department Heads, Co-Workers and other county Employees. Internal Communication is primarily in person, via telephone, radio, written memorandum and miscellaneous reports.RESPONSIBILITY:Deputy Park Ranger job has a critical impact on the County and the Parks System and public image. Job responsibilities include constant dealing with the public. It also includes constant handling of confidential information/documents related to the job. Job requires that any and all crimes be reported.DIFFICULTY:Uses good judgment at all times. Judgment is required to ensure completion and effectiveness of the job performance to ensure completion of special assignments andspecial projects.GUIDANCE:Employee receives direction to perform essential functions from Chief Park Ranger and those in the Park Ranger Department chain of command. Employee develops unique solution for completing work assignment within the bounds of the law and officially adopted policies and procedures.This position is subject to a one (1) year probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility.
