BACKGROUND CHECK:

PROBATION:
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 6-month probation.
ELIGIBILITY:
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
EDUCATION ACCREDITATION:
Applicants' education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
A Park Ranger II is responsible for performing work in large and/or small urban parks involving patrol and security duties, educating and enforcing the park rules and regulations, providing basic visitor services, and educating the public about the parks system's historical and ecological value. Work of this class involves leading park enforcement staff but does not involve supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work an assigned shift to provide 24-hour 7-day a week coverage subject to call-back as required for emergencies. Work is primarily performed out-of-doors where there may be exposure to inclement weather, extreme temperature and irate persons. Work requires physical activity in walking, standing and occasional strenuous physical exertion when apprehending or arresting persons engaged in illegal activity.
SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have a high school diploma or GED certification from an accredited institution.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have two (2) years of experience in security, law enforcement, park management or a related field.
OR
EQUIVALENCIES: Possess an associate's degree in law enforcement, park management, or a related field, or have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES:
Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver's permit.
Incumbents must obtain First Aid/CPR/AED Certification prior to hire and to be maintained throughout employment.
NOTE: Incumbents must be eligible to obtain a Certificate of Appointment as a Special Enforcement Officer by the Police Commissioner of the City of Baltimore prior to hire. Revocation of the Certificate of Appointment by the Police Commissioner is grounds for dismissal. Certificate of Appointment as a Special Enforcement Officer requires the applicant to:
* Be 21 years of age: and
* Satisfactorily pass a fingerprint and background investigation conducted by the Baltimore City Police Department.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
* Knowledge of Department of Natural Resources Park rules, regulations, policies and objectives.
* Knowledge of the criminal, civil and traffic laws of Maryland.
* Knowledge of methods and techniques of park operation and maintenance.
* Knowledge of first aid.
* Ability to learn and apply laws, regulation, and administration procedures applicable to park operations.
* Ability to communicate effectively.
* Ability to deal with the public in a courteous manner.
* Ability to lead others in the work.
* Ability to think quickly in an emergency.
* Ability to plan and carry out varied maintenance activities.
* Ability to ride a mountain bike.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
