Duties
Major Duties:
* Conduct regularly scheduled Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) patrols of various park resources such as backcountry and/or wilderness areas, park trails, campgrounds, parking lots, shorelines, rivers, docks, roads, concessions, etc. in accordance with well-established procedures and precedents.
* While on patrol, provide visitors with information and education to ensure their safety, obtain their cooperation, and facilitate safe visitor use of park resources.
* Provide administrative, operational, and logistic support to PSAR-related educational activities conducted by the organization in accordance with well-established practices and precedents.
* Serve as a member of a Search and Rescue (SAR) Team on events that may require trail response, ground/hasty searches, helicopter evacuations, river rescues, body recoveries, and/or litter carries.
* Conduct regularly scheduled climbs in technical, high angle terrain for the purpose of PSAR.
* Grand Canyon and Arches only: Under medical oversight, provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients. Respond to and return safely from Emergency Medical Service (EMS) assistance/calls.
* Devils Tower only: lead climbing routes using traditional climbing methods rated at 5.9 or higher on the Yosemite decimal system. Successfully climb the Tower to monitor recreational climbing activities and also check climbing permits.
* Zion only: Process reservations in accordance with clearly established guidelines. Explain rules and regulations to permit holders. Use automated reservation systems to process permit and reservations.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/04/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. SELECTIVE FACTOR (Grand Canyon and Arches only): This position performs emergency medical services, and a National Registry EMT certification or higher is required. SELECTIVE FACTOR (Devils Tower only): This position performs climbing duties, and the ability to lead climbing routes using traditional climbing methods rated at 5.9 or higher on the Yosemite decimal system is required. If individuals cannot lead traditional climbing routes rated at 5.9 or higher, they will not be able to successfully climb the Tower to monitor recreational climbing activities and to check climbing permits. Education

Grand Canyon Area Information:
This position is stationed at Grand Canyon National Park at the South Rim located in Northern Arizona. The South Rim is located approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 82 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 90 degrees in the summer to 0 degrees in the winter. Annual precipitation averages around 13 inches.
Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, churches, a recreation center with gym, a public library, a clinic with resident physicians, and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,500 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Flagstaff has a population of about 75,000 and has multiple K-12 public and private schools, Northern Arizona University, and diverse community, medical and other support services. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backpacking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities. Seasonal employees obtain housing by assignment into shared furnished quarters.
North Rim Area Information:
The North Rim District is situated on the rim of the Grand Canyon amidst the vast public lands of the Arizona Strip. It is about 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the Grand Canyon or a 215 mile drive which takes approximately 4 hours. The nearest community with full range of services is located in Kanab, UT approximately 80 miles from the North Rim. The elevation on the North Rim is about 8,200 feet and consequently the climate in the summer is mild with highs in the 80's and lows in the 50's. Between May 15 and October 15 the North Rim receives approximately 500,000 visitors. The North Rim has a robust concession operation which features a historic full service lodge with accommodations serving around 500 visitors, 230 concession employees, a general store, post office, mule ride concession, gas station, campground, etc. Beyond the North Rim Village the district has about 20 miles of paved scenic roads, 80 miles of high clearance 4 wheel drive roads, and hundreds of miles of trails/routes including immediate access to the North Kaibab Trail/cross-canyon corridor. Employees are assigned quarters, possibly shared, in a cabin, apartment, or house.
Zion Area Information:
Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime high temperatures ranging from 95 to 110 degrees in the summer, and 55 to 10 degrees in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah, located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious, and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, (63 miles), Utah. Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale, with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Utah Tech University is located in St. George, and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. Seasonal employees may obtain housing by assignment into shared furnished quarters. Housing is not guaranteed.
Devils Tower Area Information:
Devils Tower National Monument is the nation's first national monument. Located in Northeast Wyoming, it was set aside to preserve the 867-foot column of igneous rock along with prehistoric/historic cultural resources and the plants and animal life of the area. The park is 1,347 acres with an elevation of about 3,800 feet. The climate is usually mild and typical of the Black Hills region. High temperatures can range from the mid-90s in the summer to the 50s in the spring & fall. The three closest communities are Hulett (nine miles), Sundance (28 miles), and Moorcroft (30 miles) which have basic services. The larger communities of Spearfish, SD and Gillette, WY are approximately 60 miles away with many services available.
Arches NP Area Information:
A town of approximately 6,000 residents sitting at a 4,000-foot elevation, Moab provides all basic amenities including doctors, dentists, a hospital, schools (K-12), churches, and shopping. Arches National Park contains the world's largest concentration of natural stone openings. Arches, spires, balanced rocks, canyons and fins of colorful red rocks are set against the dramatic backdrop of the La Sal Mountains, rising to over 12,000 ft in elevation. Physical Demands: This position includes a mixture of duties and responsibilities that can be both sedentary as well as extremely physically demanding. Positions assigned responsibility for patrols, all-hazard incident response, search and rescue, watercraft operation, etc. may require extended periods of standing, walking, hiking, riding, rowing, and carrying of heavy items weighing more than 50 pounds over long distances, to include safety and rescue supplies for injured/ill park visitors. Employees who participate in all-hazard incident operations in certain roles may be required to meet fitness requirements on a continuing basis.
Work Environment: The work can include moderate risks or discomforts that require safety precautions (e.g., exposure to extreme temperatures, climates, rough terrain, wild animals, pests, and/or insects). The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, boots, gloves, etc. Some employees may be engaged in all-risk operations and be exposed to high risk and potentially dangerous situations which require a range of safety and other precautions.
